Game Recap

SPECTACULAR DEFENSE STARS IN 21-14 HUSKY WIN AT JASPER

In a spectacular show of defense, the North Huskies intercepted four passes enroute to a 21-14 victory over the Jasper Wildcats.  Senior T.J. Michel, playing the best game of his career, spearheaded the win with a pair of fake punts in which he ran for first downs, a punt inside the Jasper 5-yard line in the fourth quarter, stripped a runner of the ball that Jalen Lynch returned 76 yards for a touchdown, recorded six tackles (including one for loss), and intercepted a pass late in the game to seal the victory.

DRIVE KEPT ALIVE

North’s opening drive had apparently stalled at their 37 when Michel lined up to punt on fourth-and-ten.  Taking the snap, the senior rolled to his right on what appeared to be a rugby-style punt but then just kept running.  18 yards later, North had a first down at the Jasper 45.

The Huskies hammered away at the Wildcats with the biggest gain being a 23-yard scamper by sophomore Hunter McKinney behind fellow sophomore Ike Elmer.  Hit by a defender at the 15, McKinney carried three defenders to the three-yard line before going down.  Senior ‘Q’ Pauley scored his tenth touchdown of the season on the next play and Stuart Land’s extra point gave the Huskies a 7-0 lead with 6:54 to play in the first quarter.

LYNCH CAN FLY

Jasper started the ensuing drive at the 35-yard line and marched downfield on ten plays to the North ten.  Senior Ricky White, Jr. recorded his third tackle-for-loss on first down to help stall the drive and force a field goal attempt from the 22-yard line.  A low snap caused the holder to get up and run with the ball to his right—only to be met head-on by Michel flying in from the end.  He stripped the ball from the runner as he made the tackle and senior Jalen Lynch scooped it up.  Making like a sprinter, Lynch took off toward the end zone and flew down the sideline in front of the Jasper bench for 76 yards.  North led 14-0 with 3:04 to play in the quarter.

MISSED OPPORTUNITY

Senior De’Amontey Layne intercepted a Wildcat pass at midfield to set up a short field ahead of the Huskies as the game entered the second quarter.  The Huskies repeated the formula of relying heavily on the running game and steadily drove toward Jasper’s end zone.  An 18-yard sweep by Cole McBride gave North first-and-goal at the ten.  Four plays later on the one-yard line, however, North fumbled the ball away and the opportunity to go up three scores was missed.

Jasper responded with their only successful drive of the game driving 92 yards on 13 plays.  Putting together six first-downs, they used up over seven minutes of time before scoring a rushing touchdown from the five.  North went into halftime leading 14-7.

SECOND HALF

MR. WHITE GREETS THE WILDCATS

With two games remaining in the season, Ricky White stands on the brink of setting an All-Time Husky record for Most Tackles-For-Loss in a season.  Kaleb Harris set the record in 2023 with 27 and now plays for the Indiana State Sycamores.  In Jasper’s first possession of the second half, White single-handedly stalled the drive with a pair of tackles-for-loss that brought his season total to 26—one short of tying the record.

After the Wildcats punted, the Huskies fumbled the ball away on their next possession.  As Jasper steadily progressed downfield, the Green-and-White got a big play from another senior when Darian Walker picked off a pass.  Junior Jeraden Copeland, enjoying a big game of his own with four tackles (two for loss), nearly sacked the quarterback on the play forcing a hasty throw from the quarterback that Walker stepped in front of at the North 17 and returned to the 23.

GARRETT ON THE POST PATTERN

Watching the maturation of junior Jayden Jones into a varsity quarterback has become a joy for the North faithful in 2025.  The tall, lanky QB can muscle his way for gains in short yardage situations, he manages the clock to North’s advantage, and, when called upon to do so, he can hit a receiver deep down the middle of the field.

Immediately following Walker’s interception, North ran a play-action fake and Jones retreated five steps and looked downfield.  Senior Evan Garrett, the Huskies’ leading receiver in 2024, has proven to be the player Jones looks for most often when a deep strike is called for.  Garrett had two steps on his defender and was increasing the distance on a post pattern at the 48-yard line.  Jones delivered a perfect strike and Garrett streaked 52 more yards for a 77-yard touchdown.  Sophomore Colin Falconer’s extra point kick gave North a 21-7 lead with five minutes to play in the third quarter.

ANOTHER SENIOR CHASING RECORDS

Jasper gamely tried to fight their way back and drove into North territory on their next possession. Facing second-and-nine at the North 42, their quarterback dropped back to pass and was forced to escape junior Carson Conley’s pass rush.  Throwing the ball to his right, he was surprised to see senior Aman Kincaid jumping the route his receiver had taken.  To the amazement of everyone, Kincaid snagged the high throw with a spectacular one-handed grab for an interception.  The ‘pick’ was the fifth of Kincaid’s career and moved him into the All-Time Top Ten for that statistic.

DEFENSE CLOSES THE SHOW

Down two scores in the fourth quarter and having no success running the ball against North’s defense, Jasper went exclusively to the passing game to try and cut the deficit.  A blown coverage opportunity presented itself and the Wildcats got a 59-yard touchdown on a ‘catch-and-run’ short pass.  Trailing by just one score with 8:46 to play, it was to be their final success of the game.

Jasper forced a North punt at their 42 with five minutes to play.  T.J. Michel then booted a text-book-perfect kick that rolled dead at the five-yard line.  Jeraden Copeland swarmed into the backfield and very nearly tackled a runner for a safety on the first play from scrimmage.  With the ball at the ‘one-foot’ line, a pair of passes fell incomplete and brought up a Wildcat punt.

The ensuing Husky possession stalled at the Jasper 26 and the Wildcats blocked a field goal attempt to get ‘one-last-gasp’ at their 35.  With 1:59 to play there was still time for a ‘come back’.

And that’s when T.J. Michel sealed their fate with an interception at the North 43.

SIX-AND-TWO

The Huskies leave Jasper with their best start to a season since a Mike Wilson coached squad in 2007 opened with the identical record on their way to a nine-win season.  The 2025 Huskies look to be rolling toward a Sectional that could be memorable in Zac Nero’s first season at the helm.
