Game Recap

HUSKIES FOLLOW PAULEY TO VICTORY OVER BULLDOGS

Senior ‘Q’ Pauley rushed for 150 yards and scored North’s first three touchdowns in a 49-12 victory over the Bosse Bulldogs at Bundrant Stadium.  On a night when lightning twice delayed the game, Homecoming festivities were delayed for two weeks, and the Huskies fumbled the ball away four times, Pauley and fellow senior Ricky White, Jr. refused to be distracted by events.

OPPORTUNE DEFENSE, POWERFUL OFFENSE

Ricky White led the defensive effort with 10 tackles (8 solo), 4.5 tackles for loss, and a quarterback sack in the game.  He was joined by fellow senior Mike Epps who also recorded 4.5 tackles for loss and a quarterback sack.  Overall, the Huskies were able to counteract their own tendency to turn the ball over by taking the ball away on defense.  Seniors Cameron Watkins and Evan Garnett both came away with the ball at opportune times.

The Husky offensive line dominated the Bulldogs throughout the game.  Their power was represented by North’s 361 yards rushing on just 43 attempts—an AVERAGE of 8.4 yards per carry.  Not only did Pauley run for 150 yards, but his backfield mate, sophomore Hunter McKinney, carried 13 times for 123 yards as well.  It marked the first time since November of 2023 the Huskies put a pair of backs over 100 yards rushing in the same game.

EARLY FIREWORKS

Bosse got a tremendous return on the opening kickoff and were standing in North territory when they lined up for the first play from scrimmage.  The Bulldogs looked to start the game with a bang by throwing the ball deep down the right-hand side toward the endzone.  Evan Garnett smothered the Bosse receiver in coverage and intercepted the ball at the five-yard line.

Seven consecutive running plays covered 95 yards and took just two minutes as the Huskies zoomed to a 7-0 lead.  Bosse, however, converted a third and long situation in their ensuing possession with a 44-yard pass that moved them deep into North territory.  They finished the drive off with a 3-yard touchdown run to trail by a score of 7-6

TURNOVERS, TURNOVERS, TURNOVERS

After a highlight real laden first seven minutes of the game, things turned sloppy very quickly.  North fumbled the ball away at their 47 and Bosse took six plays to move inside the redzone.  Senior Baron Briscoe then stripped a runner of the ball in the backfield and Cameron Watkins snagged the loose ball for North.

In what would become the formula for the Huskies in this game, every possession they did not fumble the ball away, North would hammer the Bosse defense with running plays and score a touchdown.  Such was the case on the ensuing possession as North went 65 yards in six plays with Pauley scoring on a counter play up-the-middle from 25 yards out.  North led 14-6.

BOSSE TAKES ADVANTAGE

The defense found plenty of heroes as White demoralized the Bulldogs with his routine tackles for loss.  On third down and eleven, it was Jeraden Copeland who stormed in and achieved ‘hero status’ by sacking the Bosse quarterback.

Unfortunately, following a Bulldog punting situation gone wrong, North failed to make the most of terrific field position.  Three running plays into their possession, a Husky fumbled and the ball was picked up ‘on-the-bounce’ by a Bulldog defender who went 78 yards to make the game a 14-12 affair.

GAME DELAYS FOLLOWED BY HUSKY SUCCESS

Following a failed two-point conversion attempt, the first of over 90 minutes worth of lightning delays took place.  It wasn’t until after 9:30 PM before the two teams began again in earnest.  Bosse attempted an onside kick that senior Derek Dean recovered at midfield.  North then repeated their formula and drove to the end zone on a string of six consecutive running plays.  Pauley’s third touchdown of the game came on an 18-yard run as he weaved between defenders who could not pull him down.  Derek Kirsch’s third of an eventual six extra-point kicks made the score 21-12 at halftime.

REPEATING THE EQUATION

To put the second half in perspective, as mentioned earlier, during this game North scored seven of the eight times they held onto the ball.  The second half was a repeat of the first—a fumble at the Bosse 38 stalled the first possession and a fumble at the Bosse 34 stalled the second possession.  Senior Mike Epps took over the third quarter from his defensive tackle position and devoured the Bulldog offense—he recorded three tackles for loss and a quarterback sack in the period.  As a result, Bosse could not capitalize on North’s second half mistakes.

JONES SCORES A PAIR

Epps’ final highlight came when he tackled the Bosse punter for a ten-yard loss at the Bulldog 34.  It took the Huskies just three plays for quarterback Jayden Jones to score on a nine-yard run up the middle.  After North went up 28-12, it was time for another defender to don the ‘Hero’s mantle’.

DeAmontey Layne had a ‘night to remember’ on special teams.  He recorded the tackle on North’s lone punt of the night, had another on a kickoff, and, after Jone’s score, he recovered an onsides kick at the Bosse 47.  But that was not to be his biggest moment—that would come in the fourth quarter.

With the ball at midfield following Layne’s recovery, the offense drove 45 yards in four plays.  On the fifth play, Jones took a quarterback sneak into the end zone to put North up 35-12 as the third quarter neared its end.

CLOSING OUT THE SHOW

Bosse was having no luck with its punting game and chose to attempt to convert a fourth-and-three at their 15-yard line.  They were unsuccessful in their attempt and it took just one play for Jones to connect with Derek Dean for a touchdown.  The pass was North’s lone completion in the game—never facing a third-and-long situation in the contest, there was no need to throw the ball.  Averaging 8.4 yards per rushing attempt, passing was simply unnecessary.

When Bosse faced fourth-and-twenty-two at their one-yard line, the option not-to-punt was taken away from them.  The kick arced out of the endzone to the 28-yard line and into the waiting arms of DeAmontey Layne.  A Conference, Sectional, and Regional champion sprinter in track & field, Layne’s speed was on display as he raced to his left in a sprint toward the goal line.

The Bulldog lineup featured several members of their track team as well, but this was the moment in which #2 for North decided it was ‘his’ night-of-memories.  He won the sprint and streaked into the endzone untouched.  North went up 49-12 when sophomore Colin Falconer kicked the extra point.  Up by 37, the game reverted to a running clock and the highlights were done for the evening.

It was after 11pm when the crowd shuffled out of Bundrant Stadium to celebrate the Huskies’ 3-2 record at the season’s mid-point.
