MISCUES COSTLY IN 21-0 LOSS TO TIGERS

Troubles in the kicking game continued to plague the Huskies in a 21-0 loss to Memorial at Enlow Field.  Despite the defense turning in a sterling effort, the Tigers started drives from inside the North 40-yard line four different times in the game and had an average starting field position of midfield.  North, by contrast, faced an average starting field position of their 23-yard line and never started further out than their 31-yard line.

THE HUSKY DEFENSE IS STOUT

The Husky defense was stingy from the get go—averting a Memorial touchdown when North’s first punt attempt resulted in a high snap from center downed at the 1-yard line.  Anchored by exceptional play by seniors Ricky White, Jr., Mike Epps, and Kaimen Parsons, North yielded the Tigers a net of just four yards rushing in the first half of the game.

Both Memorial first half scores came through the air on drives that started in North territory.  Going into intermission, the Tigers had managed just four first downs in the game—and one of those came on a 29-yard touchdown pass on third-and-twelve.

When Memorial took the second half kickoff and steadily drove down field, it was senior Darian Walker who thwarted the drive.  Tracking the tracker’s best receiver across the field on a post pattern, Walker and the receiver both leapt several feet above the ground to go for the reception.  The North safety got there first and then refused to allow the Tiger player to wrestle the ball away from him as they landed in the end zone.

AGAIN, AND AGAIN AND AGAIN

As a result of the interception, the Huskies took over at their twenty and managed to bang out a first down before stalling.  Disaster struck when, for the third time in the game, the attempted punt resulted in a loss of yardage and the Tigers regained the ball at the Husky 21.

On the first play from scrimmage, Memorial passed the ball a receiver coming in motion on a jet sweep and, while the Husky defense managed to contain the outside corridor, the receiver slipped back into the middle of the field and streaked 20 yards to the end zone.  Memorial had their final score and the game went to 21-0

LATE DRIVES THWARTED BY TURNOVERS

Twice in the fourth quarter, North made the most of changing its offense to a shotgun style, pass oriented offense as the Huskies tried to close the gap.  On two different drives, senior receiver Evan Garnett caught passes and picked up large chunks of yardage.  Ultimately, with Memorial aware that the Huskies needed to pass to score quickly and playing a deep zone defense, both possessions were met with interceptions as North moved into the ‘red zone’.

GAME MORE BALANCED THAN THE SCORE

The final score betrayed a game that—outside of special teams miscues—was contested on a fairly even level of competition.  Ricky White finished with 11 tackles (two for loss), Mike Epps recorded two tackles for loss and a quarterback sack, Walker had three tackles to go with the touchdown saving interception, and senior Parker Daugherty was credited with six tackles (three solo).  The Husky defense is equal to the last several editions of North football.  Time will tell if enough adjustments can be made to take full advantage of what the defenders
