Game Recap

RUCKER AND HUSKIES RUN PAST WARRIORS 13-3

The North Huskies ran past the Harrison Warriors in a 13-3 victory Friday night at Romain Stadium.  Senior Jason Rucker became just the fourth player in North history to rush for more than 200 yards in at least three games in his career.  The Husky defense, led by linebackers Ricky White and Matthew Pegram, held the Warriors to just seven yards rushing on 25 attempts as North outgained Harrison by 261 yards on the ground.

FIRST QUARTER WOES

The North offense struggled early in the game and barely possessed the ball for three minutes in the first quarter—their only first down came on a 15-yard scamper by Rucker.  The defense, however, rose to the occasion and held strong against a ferocious Harrison aerial assault.  When the Warriors reached midfield early in the game, White and senior Ethan Bowden tackled a runner for loss, junior Aman Kincaid defended a second down pass, and a furious pass rush by seniors Luke Grayson and Zethan Colon forced the harried Warrior quarterback to toss a ball out of bounds and over the head of any receivers.

LAYNE AVERTS A THREAT

Later in the period, after White and Pegram dropped a runner for loss on third down, the Warrior punter picked up a snap from center that bounced back to him.  Rather than punt the ball, he took off around left end, evaded the North rush, and broke free for 23 yards before Bowden could bring him down.  Four pass plays later, Harrison had first and goal at the North ten-yard line.  Another low snap from center forced the Warrior quarterback to bobble the football and junior Deamontey Layne swept in and recovered the fumble at the North 19-yard line.

RUCKER’S FIRST SCORE

The fumble recovery led to a 12-play drive that was not pretty, but it was productive.  With the North offense struggling to gain yards thru the air, the workload fell to Rucker and the offensive line to punch holes in a surprisingly fast Harrison defense.  The senior tailback picked up 25 yards on just two carries and North was out near midfield.  At that point, however, the game devolved into a series of penalties.  On the next ten snaps, officials whistled the two teams for a combined SIX penalties.  After the flurry of flags cleared, the Huskies were facing fourth down and three at the Harrison 35-yard line.

At this point, North’s offense went strictly to handing the ball to Rucker and he responded.  Five consecutive carries culminated with a one-yard touchdown run with 3:16 to play in the first half.  Sophomore Derek Kirsch’s extra point made the score 7-0 as the Huskies went into the break.

SECOND HALF

A North fumble on their first possession after halftime nearly led to disaster.  Starting at the North 29-yard line, Harrison connected on four consecutive short passes to bring the ball to the Huskies’ one yard line and a first-and-goal-to-go.  Another bobbled snap resulted in Pegram storming in and sacking a runner for a ten-yard loss.  Bowden and White stopped a runner for no gain on second down and senior Grant Happe defended a pass in the end zone on third down to force the Warriors to settle for a field goal.

With the score at 7-3 both teams exchanged punts when they were unable to move the ball.  North’s third possession was the point at which Rucker and the offensive line simply took over the game.

RUCKER TURNS ON THE JETS

On first down, the shifty tailback took a handoff on a play designed to go inside.  Arriving where the hole was supposed to be and finding nothing but a wall of red-jerseys, Rucker instead did a jump-cut and raced to his left in a search for daylight.  Darting around the end, he shoved a stiff-arm into the sternum of a defensive back and rambled 24 yards to the North 41-yard line.

Four plays later, following a Husky holding penalty, North faced a formidable ‘first-and-twenty-five’ at their 42-yard line.  No situation is formidable when Rucker gets even a slice-of-daylight ahead of him.

On the snap from center, senior Ben Brasher pulled from his guard position and moved to his right.  As he did so, senior right guard Brady Reeves pancaked the tackle in front of him and senior right tackle Aiden Wargel took out the middle linebacker.  When Brasher flattened the defensive end AND the outside linebacker, Rucker had an opening the size of a pickup truck to run through.

He was into the Harrison secondary in a flash and needed only a screening block from junior Evan Garnett to dash into the endzone untouched after a 58-yard run.  There were problems on the hold for the extra point and North settled for a 13-3 lead with 41 seconds to play in the third quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER

The Huskies would not score again but managed to eat up eight-and-a-half minutes of the 12-minute fourth quarter by feeding the ball to Rucker repeatedly.  Two North possessions accounted for 100 yards of offense without producing a point but served the purpose of keeping the ball out of Harrison’s hands.  When the Warriors did get the ball, Deamontey Layne got his second turnover of the game with an interception.  On their final ‘gasp’, Harrison drove to the North 22 before a pair of quarterback sacks by Pegram and sophomore Carson Conley closed the show on the Warriors.
