Game Recap

NEW STARS EMERGE IN 48-12 THRASHING OF BULLDOGS

The North Huskies earned a ‘running clock’ victory by a score of 48-12 over the Bosse Bulldogs at Enlow Field Friday night.  In a game that started with multiple North regulars dressed in street clothes rather than uniforms due to injuries, the game featured an All-Time Top 10 performance from one sophomore and an emergence of some other reserve players as they elevated their respective games to replace the starters.

MISSING TRIO

The SIAC’s leading rusher, Angelo St. Louis, was unavailable to the Huskies on Friday due to an assortment of ailments and he was on the sidelines in street clothes.  Senior linebacker Jeremiah Thomas and starting left tackle Kylen Hazelwood were both out of uniform as well.  The question at game time was how well the Huskies could replace their contributions with unseasoned underclassmen?

The answer was not long in forthcoming.

OFF TO THE RACES

After holding the Bulldogs to a ‘three-and-out’ on their first possession, North benefited from a short punt and took over near midfield.  To compensate for the loss of Hazelwood, they reconfigured the offensive line to move junior Timothy Dixon to left tackle and sophomore Ben Brasher to left guard.  Seniors Landon Caswell and Chase Reeves remained at center and right tackle, respectively, and sophomore Alex Wheeler started the game at right guard.

In the backfield, sophomore Jason Rucker lined up at tailback in place of St. Louis and to say that those were some big shoes to fill would be an understatement.  To say that Rucker would fill those shoes ‘and-then-some’ would not be an understatement either.

Before the night was over, Rucker would throw down one of the Top 10 rushing performances in North football history with 257 yards rushing and four touchdowns—one of which went for 89 yards (also #4 on the All-Time longest runs in North history).

Driving 53 yards in 9 plays, the Huskies stuck to the ground-and-pound routine as the ‘new look’ offensive line worked to develop its configuration.   The lone time they went to the air, senior Conner Moorman converted a long third down with a reception from quarterback Jaylonn Mitchell and kept the drive alive at the Bosse 41.  After that, it was a matter of ‘running left’ behind Dixon and Brasher.  Rucker picked up a pair of first downs on the next two plays with gains of 16 and 11 yards dashing around left end with blazing speed.  Junior Cainen Northington entered the game to give Rucker a break and bashed away on dives and traps into the middle of the line to carry the ball to the four-yard line.  At that point, junior Kaleb Harris entered the game as a ‘wildcat’ quarterback behind North’s ‘heavy’ formation line.

When North goes ‘heavy’, they can really go HEAVY.  Starting defensive linemen Jayden Hazelwood and Delshan Davis are inserted into the line and when those two line up near Dixon and Brasher, it represents 1,200 pounds of explosive blockers for a ‘wildcat’ runner that goes 6’2” and 205 himself.

Harris easily got the first score of the game and after a rare missed extra point kick, the Huskies led 6-0 less than six minutes into the game.

DEFENSIVE DOMINATION

It would be simple to frame the story of this game as an offensive performance for the ages, but to do so would ignore one of the finest displays of defensive domination a first half of North football has seen in the last decade.  In the first quarter alone, Bosse was forced to punt four times, never gained a first down, and was held to negative six yards gained on twelve plays run.

  1. tackle a punter for a loss, cause a fumble at the Bosse eight-yard line that senior Deshaun Horne recovered

  2. combine with Davis for a quarterback sack on the first play of Bosse’s next possession

  3. tossed another runner for loss on second down.

Combined, the three plays cost Bosse 30 yards of field position and set up a touchdown—all in about one minute of game time.

The defense totally overwhelmed the Bulldogs to the extent that they simply had nowhere to run and nowhere to hide.

RUCKER’S FIRST SCORE

Following Johnson’s disruption of the Bosse punting game and Horne’s fumble recovery at the eight, it was an opportunity for the newcome to the offensive line to get involved in the scoring.  On first and goal, Rucker took a handoff up the middle and followed a double team block by Caswell and Wheeler on the Bosse nose-tackle.  The pair cleanly moved him out of the way and sophomore H-back Avier Mitchell stood up the linebacker as Rucker danced untouched into the end zone.  With 2:19 left in the quarter, the sophomore had his first varsity touchdown.  Alex Hess’ extra point made the score 13-0

NEW FACES ELEVATE THEIR GAME

Following a Bosse punt, North took over at the Bulldog 40 but suffered a loss that had the Huskies looking at fourth-down-and-three at the 33.  The situation called for a pair of running backs to line up beside Jaylonn Mitchell in shotgun formation.  Junior Hunter Fulkerson entered the game, elevated to back up tailback with St. Louis out of action, and Mitchell sent him in motion to his right.  On the snap, Fulkerson was headed with momentum into space outside the line and Mitchell delivered a quick pass.  The junior runner snagged the pass, eluded one tackler, and dashed past the first down marker and gained an additional five yards to the 25.  It was typical of the production North would receive throughout the evening as reserve players savored the chance to enter a varsity contest and elevate their game in meaningful moments.

RUCKER’S SECOND TOUCHDOWN

Another Rucker run brought the ball to the 15-yard line and this time it was a pair of familiar faces who ‘opened the door’ as Rucker ‘took it to the house’, but it was Fulkerson again who would play a key role.  Dixon and Brasher absolutely demolished the two men in front of them on the snap and Caswell stood up the nose tackle.  This surge put a dent in the Bosse line but did not account for the linebacker.  Fulkerson, still in the game as the second running back, led Rucker into the line and waylaid the remaining defender as the speedy sophomore scored his second touchdown of the game.  Mitchell Renfro’s extra point made the game 20-0 with 10:41 to play in the half and the crowd could sense that tonight was going to be a big night.

HOSPELHORN AGAIN

The lone time that Bosse challenged to score in the first half came as the result of an interception return to the North 20-yard line.  As has been the case the last couple games, junior Kasey Hospelhorn proved up to the task of disarming a threat.  At 5’9” and 145 lbs., Hospelhorn has proven to be able to make contact with runners that is at once sure handed but also deadly effective.  Bosse’s offense features a running back who was selected first team Junior All-State by the Indiana Football Coaches Association last year.  On first down at the 20, Kasey cut him down to size with an open field tackle that stripped him of the ball.  Junior Gavin Cline recovered the fumble and the stage was set for a breathtaking offensive performance.

RUCKER’S THIRD TOUCHDOWN

Years from now, after these players have graduated and are telling tall tales of days gone by, some of them will likely remember the night when Jason Rucker out ran the combined members of the Bosse 400-meter relay team in a near 100-yard dash to the end zone.  Lining up in the backfield with his feet nearly on the goal line before the snap, the first down play at the 11 called for Rucker to take the ball ‘up the middle’ of the defense.  Clearly, it was a play designed to ‘limit the damage’ and gain a little breathing space for the offense to work in.

Boy, oh boy, did it gain some breathing space but not until the breath went out of Enlow Field as they watched the winged feet of Mercury take over the shoes of Jason Rucker.  On the snap, Caswell maneuvered the nose tackle to his right and Fulkerson drove into the linebacker with a fury.  Their efforts created a crease, ‘just’ a crease, mind you in the defense.  Rucker, who weighs in at just 135 pounds, isn’t a big, powerful runner, so a crease was ‘just enough’.

To not be big in stature in football is not necessarily an impediment—not if you are blessed with speed and a bit of maneuverability.  Rucker showed he has both—in enormous quantities.  He slipped through that crease and then maneuvered his shoulder pads left and right as nearby tacklers made grabs for them.  He accelerated after those efforts and it was then a foot race with four greyhound pursuers fast on his heels.  For 70 of the 89 yards, it was a question as to whether or not the hare could outrun the hounds, but when Rucker saw a glimpse of the goal line coming up, he shifted into another gear that has not likely been witnessed on a North football field since Cornell Garrett was toting the rock nearly 45 years ago.

North’s final score of the half came with 8:21 to play and they led 27-0.

DEFENSIVE HIGHLIGHT REEL

To detail the defensive dominance that continued would take thousands of words to write.  In the first half the Huskies held Bosse to NEGATIVE 43 yards rushing and just two first downs that the Bulldogs did not earn via penalties by North.  New faces and regular numbers alike struck routinely with big plays:

The offense scored the points, but it would not be inaccurate to claim the defense set the stage for the rout that occurred.

RUCKER’S FOURTH TOUCHDOWN

The Huskies received the ball to open the second half and quickly worked their way out to the 42-yard line on a pair of runs by Rucker.  On second-and-ten, he took a handoff from junior Sam McKinney

…and was gone.

Dixon and Brasher again annihilated the entire side of the Bosse defense with crushing blocks that effectively wiped out four defenders between them and Rucker was outside and ‘on a mission’.   The surprise came, however, when he began to spot downfield defenders in his way as he streaked along the Bosse sideline.  The surprise was because of who came up to clear one last path.  Senior Jaylonn Mitchell, now playing wide receiver, came up and blocked the nearest would-be tackler and created a lane back into the center of the field.  No one was going to catch Rucker as he zoomed the final 30 yards of a 58-yard score.  North led 34-0 and the half was barely 90 seconds gone.

BENNETT PUTS THE HUSKIES OVER THE TOP

Senior Sean Bennett had a five-minute span of play that reads like a highlight film.  When Bosse got the ball back, all the linebacker did was tackle a runner for no gain on first down, stop another runner for a one-yard gain on second down, and then record a quarterback sack on third down.  With senior Dylan Haynes getting a deflection on the ensuing punt, North took over at the Bosse 44.

With Rucker already over 250 yards, it was Bennett’s turn to shine in the backfield but not until Sam McKinney got to show off a bit.  He completed a pair of passes to Cale Johnson that moved the ball all the way to the Bosse 13.  From there it was Bennett who ‘delivered the mail’.

On first down, he carried a pair of tacklers on his back to the five-yard line to set up first-and-goal.  On second down, Caswell again stood up the man in front of him and Chase Reeves outmaneuvered his defender to open a path into the line.  For his part, Bennett was left with two linebackers to get past and no one to block them.

Bosse needed one more linebacker if they intended to stop the senior from the goal line.

Bennett ran over one and through the other as he bounded into the end zone for the score that set the clock running.  The Huskies led 41-0 with 5:18 to play in the third period.

FINAL SCORE

Junior Cainen Northington finished the night at tailback for North and put a 15-yard touchdown run of his own on the board to establish North with a 48-6 lead.  Bosse recorded another score in the game’s final seconds but the Husky starting defense had long relinquished the field and the final score came in at 48-12

YOUNG PLAYERS GET A CHANCE—AND SHINE

Not all results can be like this, but on a night when the opportunities were there for untested players to step into varsity slots and prove their mettle, the Huskies drove the type of results that indicate their team is ready for whatever confronts them.  As the schedule turns to the ‘heavy lifting’ portion with Mater Dei, Jasper, and Vincennes in succession, North has shown the promise of the potential if these players need be called upon again.
