BRAWDY, HANKINS LEAD HUSKIES TO 42-17 WIN OVER LINCOLN.
The North Huskies overcame four turnovers and 105 yards in penalties to defeat the Vincennes Lincoln Alices 42-17 at Bundrant Stadium. Senior Ethan Brawdy became the school’s All-Time leader in career passing yardage and tossed his record tying thirtieth career touchdown pass. The Huskies put together 21 unanswered points in the second half to put away the persistent Alices.
With his first completion of the game, Brawdy took his place at the top of North’s leaderboard for passing yardage (passing 2004 graduate Bryce Lowery) and with the “W” put together his eleventh victory as a starting quarterback for the Huskies—the most since Deon Pendleton Jr. won 18 games between 2005 and 2007.
AUSPICIOUS START
Despite his great success for the Huskies, it cannot be forgotten that Brawdy has played the largest part of the 2021 season with a cast on his lower left arm and hand. After quickly moving North into Lincoln territory on their first possession, Brawdy was hit as he began to throw the ball. Without a left hand to steady the ball in his grasp, the ball bounced to the ground and was picked up by an Alice defender who went 51 yards for the game’s opening score. Less than three minutes into the game, the Huskies trailed 7-0.
KICK RETURNERS ‘GALORE’
One of the silver linings in a first half in which the Huskies kept giving Vincennes a short field due to turnovers, whenever the Alices would kick off, the North special teams opened seams in the defense for long returns. During the course of the game, sophomore Cainen Northington and senior K.J. Bell would repeatedly give North tremendous field position to start possessions from. On the night, the pair would AVERAGE nearly 42 yards per return on four kickoffs and give North an average starting yard line of the Lincoln 47. The advantage of that field position paid repeated dividends.
HANKINS IS A “MAN” AMONG BOYS
Bell shook off a pair of tacklers to gain an extra 15 yards on the kickoff following Vincennes’ fumble return and the Huskies took over at the Vincennes 42. Jewellz Hailey picked up a quick five yards on a slant pass from Brawdy and North faced second and five at the Lincoln 37. Brawdy lined up in the shotgun with senior T.J. Hankins positioned to his left and behind him.
Hankins is that rare breed of player who seems to excel with contact. He has played defensive end, linebacker, and occasionally served as a nose tackle. He stands just 5’10” and weighs less than 200 pounds but when he hits a runner, the runner stays “hit”. He is powerful and fueled by a passion for contact.
2021 has seen him become the featured running back for the Huskies. He is quick but he is not a sprinter. He can exploit a small seam in the defense and withstand the grabs and pulls of defenders that might throw another runner off balance.
And when he gets up a head of steam, he runs like a rolling ball of butcher knives. Heaven help you if you get in his way and if you make contact, you better be ready to ‘get’ as good as you ‘give’.
On the snap, Brawdy simply turned and slipped the ball into Hankins’ breadbasket. As he took the ball, senior center Zane Hatt neutralized the tackle in the gap to his right, freeing senior Gunnar Sales to take out the linebacker directly behind the tackle. Hankins shot into the gap between the two blockers.
Unexpectedly, the defensive tackle to the left of center had slipped off a block and lunged into the path of Hankins. The defender stood 6 feet tall and weighed 270 pounds. He was the same player who had separated Brawdy from the ball on North’s first possession. With the full leverage of his weight—over 80 pounds heavier than Hankins—he threw his body on Hankins’ left shoulder and back.
And Hankins thrust an elbow into his sternum and shed the defender like so much rain in the wind.
No other Husky running back in recent memory could have withstood such a blow without losing his feet, but Hankins revels in the contact and simply barreled into the secondary. Switching the ball to his other arm, he stuffed a thinly built safety to the ground with a vicious forearm and rambled to the two-yard line before a bevy of Alices forced him out of bounds.
On first and goal, the same defender threatened to close a hole opened by sophomore Kaleb Harris and freshman “Big” Ben Brasher. Hankins put his head down and taught the defender the meaning of the word “respect” for a second time as he barreled unstoppably into the end zone. Hankins played this game like a man among boys and would go on to become the first Husky with four rushing touchdowns in a contest since Blake Howell in 2012.
OVERCOMING MULTIPLE MISTAKES
To say that North was their own worst enemy in this game would be a huge understatement. After the defense forced the Alices to punt, junior Ethan King returned the kick to the North 40-yard line. As would repeatedly be the case on this drive, a holding penalty put the ball at the Husky 19. Another hold nullified most of a Hankins big gain on first down and the Huskies faced first-and-16 at the 13. An offsides penalty then exacerbated the problem and North was looking at first-and-21 from the 8.
First and 21 at your 8-yard line would finish off most ball clubs and a punt would soon follow—possibly from the confines of a team’s own end zone. That’s when having a three-year starter at quarterback pays off—along with a big, sure handed tight end who runs like a bull in a china shop.
On the snap, Brawdy rolled to his left—not the best position for him to pass from given his cast and the effects it has on his balance. As the defense trailed him, he stopped on a dime and shoveled the ball one-handed back to the interior of the line where tight end Kaleb Harris was trailing him. Sales and Hankins blew away the nearest defender to Harris and the 6’3” 225-pound sophomore carried, bumped, and bruised three defenders on his way to the North 27—gaining 19 yards in the process.
A quick slant pass to Hailey converted what had seemed an un-convertable first down, but another false start penalty again put the Huskies at a first-and-15 disadvantage.
IT TAKES A TEAM
The people who carry or throw the ball always seem to grab the headlines, but when the chips are down and the odds seem overwhelming, it is ‘the Team’ that must pick itself up and overcome adversity. The Team once again came through in grand fashion.
On first down, the left side of North’s offensive line was comprised of junior Cale Johnson at tight end, sophomore Timothy Dixon at left tackle, and freshman Ben Brasher at left guard—not a senior among the group. On the snap, Dixon and Brasher simply pancaked the defenders in front of them. The two linemen got underneath the shoulder pads of their men, drove them up and backwards into the ground. Johnson kept both arms ‘in’ and spun the linebacker into the carnage that Dixon and Brasher had made of the Vincennes line.
Coming from Brawdy’s right, Hankins took the handoff and within two steps had a full head of steam at the 25 and no one ahead of him for ten yards or more. To his left, junior Jayvonn Mitchell and Hailey had lined up at wide receiver and both had run straight up field with their respective defenders in front of them. As Hankins cleared the corner and rambled past the 30, both receivers went into blocking mode and simply controlled their defenders. Hailey withstood an illegal blow to the face from his defender and continued to leverage his body against the defender and forced him backwards despite the blow. Mitchell executed a text-book pancake of his own to free Hankins outside at the 40.
The first defender to make contact with the rolling ball of butcher knives at the Vincennes 45 came away worse for the wear as Hankins lowered a shoulder, put him to the ground and then stepped on him as he took on another tackler. He rolled that defender backwards another five yards, but his momentum had slowed just enough that the safety was able to catch up to the play and force him out of bounds at the 39.
Senior Cameron Gelhausen made like Hankins when a pair of defenders grabbed hold after he caught a Brawdy pass at the 26. He refused to go down on the first impact, spun, and then stiff-armed the second as he made his way to the 18-yard line before going down.
THEY JUST GET BIGGER
In an effort to shore up the battered left side of their defense, Vincennes inserted a 320 pounder at left tackle and put him head up on Brasher. The big freshman was unphased by the gargantuan across from him. On first and ten from the 18, the play called for Dixon to leave the end unblocked and fire straight up field to take out the linebacker—which Dixon did with “extreme prejudice”. Harris was sliding left from his H-Back position to neutralize the unblocked end and the play was designed for Hankins to follow Harris and step inside his block on the end.
All of this planning would be for naught if Brasher could not handle his man one-on-one. Any penetration by the ‘godzilla-wannabe’ across from him would blow-up the play. This play would either work or not dependent on whether the freshman could dislodge the tackle.
The play worked.
Brasher is no small player himself. He tips the scales north of 270 and possesses as good a blocking technique as his predecessor at left guard had—All City lineman Gage Sales who graduated in 2020. Brasher won ‘the battle of the Titans’, Harris waylaid the end, and Hankins cut behind him around the corner of the defense. Again, Hankins lowered the boom on one defender and simply laid him on the ground with his shoulder. Gelhausen neutralized the final Alice and Hankins bulled into the end zone carrying a Lincoln player with him as he scored. Junior Mitchell Renfro’s kick gave North a 14-7 lead.
FUMBLES KEEP THE GAME CLOSE
After Hankins third score of the first half, the Huskies continued to be their own worst enemy as a pair of fumbles resulted in a 21-17 halftime score. The defense had made one good stand when Vincennes made it to the North nine but had to settle for a field goal. Due to North mistakes the game was still competitive when both teams emerged from the locker room for the second half.
SECOND HALF
If the outcome was in doubt during the first half, North made the necessary adjustments to dominate the Alices after that point. Cale Johnson stalled the first Vincennes drive of the third quarter. With Vincennes facing second-and-four at the North 46, Johnson and sophomore Jayden Hazelwood stopped a runner for no gain. On third down, it fell to Johnson to make an open field tackle one-on-one with Lincoln’s best runner or give up the first down. The junior linebacker got low, grabbed the runner’s ankles, and not just stopped the threat, but threw him backwards for a two-yard loss.
Threat neutralized.
BRAWDY’S ‘GOOD’ ARM IS VERY, VERY GOOD
When the Vincennes punt rolled dead at North’s eight-yard line and the Huskies first play resulted in a fumble that junior Landon Caswell had to grab away from a Lincoln defender, it appeared that the Huskies would again sow the seeds of their own destruction. With Ethan Brawdy at the helm, such concerns can often prove unwarranted. He whipped two passes to Kaleb Harris and the Huskies were soon outside the 30.
Cainen Northington picked up fifteen yards on a pair of runs and North was at the 47. Facing third and five, the offense lined up in a ‘tight’ formation as though the Huskies were going to run again. Both ends were split no more than three yards off the tackles. Two slot receivers were inside of the ends and a running back stood next to Brawdy. By all appearances, blockers were in place to provide the support necessary to overwhelm either end.
On the snap, a slot receiver came left in front of Brawdy and he faked a handoff to the runner. The free safety took two steps forward in preparation to stop what he thought would be a run by the Huskies. Those two steps proved fatal for the Alices.
Gelhausen, lined up at wide receiver, had sprinted off the line and the cornerback was to his outside. Since the safety had his momentum coming forward to potentially stop the run, Gelhausen blew past him and turned his rout into the center of the field. With the cornerback to his outside, the defender was trailing him by a step. As he crossed the Vincennes 25-yard line, all he needed was the ball.
Brawdy had retreated backwards after the fake handoff and was now standing near the Husky 35 as he wound up to throw. Given Gelhausen’s full head of steam, the throw would have to travel nearly 50 yards in the air and be delivered ahead of him.
The perfect spiral Brawdy tossed was a thing-of-beauty. The arc of the pass reached its highest point about halfway between the two and landed in Gelhausen’s hands without the receiver having to miss a step. The defensive back was near enough to attempt at a tackle at the ten, but the senior’s balance was perfect as he shed the tackler and went into the end zone for a 53-yard touchdown.
THE DEFENSE SHUTS DOWN THE ALICES
Over the course of the second half, the Husky defense forced four punts on five possessions, made a fourth-and-two defensive stop on the fifth possession, and held the Alices to just two first downs until barely a minute remained in the game. Once the offense stopped turning the ball over, the North defense put on a dominant display of powerhouse football.
The Huskies won the second half 21-0 and put up over 200 yards of total offense while allowing just 78—and thirty of those came on the game’s final three plays with reserves getting experience. For a team with as many underclassmen starting as they have seniors, this was a game that proved the Husky program is building to a crescendo and is in the best condition it has been in for quite some time.
