Game Recap

EARLY MISTAKES COSTLY IN 28-20 LOSS TO MEMORIAL

Early Husky mistakes proved costly in a narrow 28-20 lost to Memorial at Enlow Field Friday night.  As North drops to 0-2 on the season, the team played much better than their record would indicate.

As is sometimes the case in football, on a night when a series of events turned North’s fate upside down, certain players overcame the early adversity and elevated their game to help the Huskies post a competitive showing that had the outcome in doubt until the contest’s closing moments.

FIRST PLAY BLUES SEES HUSKIES RESPOND

Misfortune came in the way of a fumble on the game’s opening kickoff and put the Huskies on defense at their 17-yard line.  In just under three minutes of play, North trailed 7-0.

If things went awry on the game’s first play, the Huskies second opportunity at a kickoff return was straight out of the textbook.  As freshman Jason Rucker drifted back to the one-yard line to catch the kick, a pair of blockers made extraordinary plays.  Sophomore Kaleb Vashon drifted all the way back from the 40-yard line and across the field to form a barrier along with junior Angelo St. Louis and senior K.J. BellRucker quickly pivoted off their ‘wall’ and sprinted into the middle of the field.  Senior Jacob Kyle took out the interior pursuit with a block and the freshman sprinter was free.  As he approached mid-field he attempted a spin to evade the Memorial kicker, but was brought down by the effort.

North had the ball near the 45-yard line and appeared to be ready to answer the Memorial score…

except a long gain on a pass from senior quarterback Ethan Brawdy to junior Jayvonn Mitchell got called back due to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty along the Memorial sidelines.  It appeared the drive might stall until Memorial returned the favor with a personal foul on third down at the North 47.

In an opening quarter that saw a whopping TEN penalties called on the two teams, North committed a false start on third-and-one at the Memorial 29 and again the Huskies appeared to be their own worst enemy.  Faced with third and six, Brawdy faked a handoff to St. Louis and then quickly dropped back to throw.  Senior Cameron Gelhausen was running a fly pattern down the North sideline and Brawdy’s pass sailed over a defender’s outstretched arms and into the hands of his receiver for a 34-yard touchdown pass.  Junior Mitchell Renfro’s kick tied the score at 7 just five minutes into the game.

PENALTIES GIVE AND TAKE

The Tigers took over at their 32 and within two plays appeared to have a lightning score of their own.  A block-in-the-back penalty called back a 55-yard run and the Huskies appeared to dodge a bullet.  Unfortunately, the way the first quarter would play out with penalties, North committed a 15-yard face mask penalty two plays later and the Tigers wound up with a first down at the Husky eleven.  Two plays later a power run up the middle produced a 14-7 Tiger lead.

SECOND QUARTER SEES A PUNTER BATTLE

Where the first quarter was all about penalties creating opportunities for both teams, the next twelve minutes of play were contested without a flag.  What resulted was a series of punt exchanges as neither team could gain an upper hand.  It fell to North to put things together with a series of four first downs as the half wound down.

POWER FOOTBALL FROM THE HUSKIES

Taking over at the North 40, the Huskies put together a mix of short passes and runs to move the ball deep into Memorial territory.  Senior Jewellz Hailey, making his season debut, picked up a first down on one reception and then reduced a third-and-ten situation to a manageable fourth-and-inches at the Memorial 40 with another.   When Brawdy threaded his way through the right side to the 35, the offensive line took over from there.

A pair of St. Louis inside runs took the ball to the 30 and a Brawdy run off the left side behind sophomore Timmy Dixon, freshman guard Ben Brasher, and senior Zane Hatt resulted in a first down at the 24.  Senior T.J. Hankins entered the game at running back and he followed junior Cale Johnson’s block into the center of the line for a nine-yard pick up.

On second and one Brawdy cut to his left behind Brasher and senior Gunnar Sales and tried to leap over a defender but came down at the seven for a first-and-goal.  With Hatt and Dixon blocking down the line on the right side, the big freshman guard Brasher showed his mobility and pulled down the line to block out BOTH the defensive end AND the linebacker.  Hankins took the handoff behind him and drove seven yards straight into the end zone to tie the score with 3:34 to play in the half.

North put together a 13-play scoring drive that appeared to change the momentum of the game.

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

Until Memorial returned the kickoff to midfield.

Having used up time outs early in the game, the Tigers were in ‘high gear’ when they took over and made the most of their time.  Improbably they converted multiple third downs and found themselves at the North 19 with just 10 seconds on the clock and no time outs left.  Facing third and ten, their quarterback dropped back, found himself surrounded by Huskies, and eluded the rush.  Breaking back to his right, the North defensive secondary was distracted by the field reversal of the quarterback and lost track of a receiver.

The Memorial quarterback did not lose track of his receiver and tossed a touchdown pass with two seconds left.  The Tigers led at half 21-14.

SECOND HALF

BIG PLAYS TELL THE STORY

The Tigers made a pair of big plays on offense and a pair of big plays on defense in the second half of the game and the contest turned on those plays.  In their first possession of the third quarter, facing second and 15, a Memorial back turned the corner and scampered to the North 31 before he could be brought down.  On the following play, the Tigers handed the ball to the runner on an apparent sweep to the right.  North defenders lined up to stop the run…

…Except the runner stopped and threw the ball downfield to an open receiver.  North’s defense had ‘bitten’ on the deception and the result was a 31-yard touchdown pass.  Memorial led 28-14 and left it to their defense to hold the lead.

DEFENSES DIG IN

The Huskies were not prepared to give up the line of scrimmage to the Tigers and North promptly marched its way back downfield.  In nine plays they were down to the Memorial 21 and it seemed as though North was going to answer Memorial’s score with one of their own.  On second and ten, a Brawdy pass was tipped at the line of scrimmage and fell in the hands of a Tiger defender.

When North’s defense came on the field, it was evident that this would be the possession that determined if the Huskies were still ‘in the game’.  Begrudgingly, the North defense yielded ground in small bits but bent backwards.  As the Tigers reached the North 28, the beleaguered defenders stood tall.

Senior Mitchell Happe sniffed out a pitch play and smothered a runner for seven-yard loss on first down.  Junior Cale Johnson made a brilliant open field tackle to prevent a long gain on the outside and Memorial was facing third and long.  A pass fell harmlessly incomplete and the Tigers’ 47-yard field goal attempt came up well short.

North’s defense had come up strong when it mattered and was going to give the offense a chance to answer.

CALE JOHNSON PROVIDES THE SPARK

As the game entered the fourth quarter, it provided a stage for a player to take charge.  Junior Cale Johnson, a second-year starter at linebacker and a first year starter at tight end, chose to stand center stage.  With the ball at North’s 34 and facing second and long following the Huskies eighth penalty of the game—a penalty that negated a Brawdy run into Memorial territory—Johnson lined up in the slot to the left.

Johnson, visibly faster in 2021 than he was as a sophomore, took off on the snap and zipped into the Memorial secondary.  Brawdy tossed him the ball at the Memorial 45 between three defenders, and the receiver flew to the Tigers’ 18-yard line before going down.  Three Brawdy runs had the ball at the seven-yard line and Johnson was lined up tight on the right-hand side.

Brawdy took the snap and the Memorial rush on his right forced him to give ground and roll to his left.  In a heady play at the goal line, Johnson cut off his route when he saw the rush closing on Brawdy and immediately began chasing the the ball as he trotted along the goal line.  With the defenders closing in, the three-year starter at quarterback once again attempted one of the most difficult throws in football.

With his momentum carrying him to his left and his weight on his back foot, Brawdy spotted Johnson’s outstretched right arm and threw across his body and against his momentum.  The ball threaded perfectly between a pair of defenders and into Johnson’s hands.  North trailed by eight when the extra point failed but there were eight minutes remaining to play.

WHEN YOU NEED A BIG PLAY, DIAL NINE

Memorial took over at the 29 following a squibbed kickoff and they proceeded to hand the ball to their running back repeatedly.  Converting multiple first downs the game moved into its final four minutes and it appeared that the Huskies’ defense was going to yield the final coup-de-grace.

And then Cale Johnson, wearing uniform number nine, made his ninth solo tackle of the game.

With a first and ten at the North 35, Memorial lined up in the shotgun formation.  Having run the ball six straight times to get there, they looked to be attempting a pass.  Whatever the play was, a bad snap sent the ball careening from the quarterback’s grasp.  In a flash, the white-and-green number nine was on the quarterback, stripping him of his desperate reach for the football, and recovering the fumble for North.

The Huskies had the miracle they needed.  The ball was in their hands at the North 46 with four minutes to play on the clock.

ONE LAST STUMBLE

On a night in which North was its own worst enemy with nine penalties for ninety yards, a first play turnover, and a tipped ball interception, no play was bigger than the final stumble.  Out past midfield, Brawdy was chased to his right and whipped a ball along the sidelines.  A Memorial defender came jetting across the field from his safety position and snatched the ball from the air just inches before stepping out of bounds.  Memorial had the ball and would not surrender it during the final three minutes.  North’s chances to win were gone as the Tigers converted a third down at the North 43 and the clock ran out on the Huskies.

THE HUSKIES ARE SOLID

North is a good football team that has often played well in its first two games.  It has also been mistake prone and surrendered big plays at inopportune times.  There is reason to be hopeful as they return home to Bundrandt Stadium Friday night.  Despite the 0-2 start, this is a team that could turn some heads as the season goes along.
