MISSED CHANCES COST HUSKIES 25-12 LOSS
In football, second chances are hard to come by. Friday night at John Lidy Field, the North Huskies squandered second, third, and fourth chances in the first half of the game and paid the price in a 25-12 loss to the Castle Knights.
From the outset, North was the better prepared team. Despite missing multiple starters on both sides of the ball due to Covid Contact Tracing requirements, the Huskies thoroughly dominated the first half of the game. As evidence, North led in time of possession 18:05 to just 5:55, plays run 39 to 14, and first downs ten to two. For their efforts, however, they trailed at halftime 7 to 0.
BRAWDY LEADS THE WAY
Senior quarterback Ethan Brawdy, a three-year starter for the Huskies, displayed the type of leadership and passing ability that has him near the top of every career passing and victory column in the North record book. Playing behind an opening night offensive line that featured a nucleus of returning starters in the middle with seniors Gunnar Sales at left guard, Garrett Mooney at center, and Zane Hatt at right guard, as well as a pair of sophomores in the tackle positions with Jayden Hazelwood at left tackle and Timmy Dixon on the right, Brawdy showed off his pin-point precision passing skills by zipping an 11 yard gain to sophomore tight end Kaleb Harris to convert a third and long.
Twice in the drive Brawdy connected on slant routes to senior Cameron Gelhausen for another pair of first downs as the Huskies drove to the Castle 19. At that point, however, the Huskies squandered their first scoring opportunity of the half. A false start penalty followed by two runs that went nowhere set up third and long. The Knights blitzed a pair of linebackers on the snap and Brawdy was sacked for a ten-yard loss.
Faced with “fourth-and-forever”, the Huskies took a delay of game penalty to give their punter more field in which to attempt a coffin-corner punt and pen the Knights up in front of their end zone. The strategy went for naught, though, when the long snap sailed over the punter’s head. First and ten at the Knights 19 became Castle ball at the North 33 in less than a minute.
DEFENSE STANDS TALL
It is not an enviable position for a defense that features six new faces to be called upon to ‘man-up’ in the shadow of their own goal posts on the opening possession of a season. Last year’s stalwarts have given way to this season’s new faces and it was a quick test to see what the 2021 Husky defense could do.
They quickly proved their mettle.
Junior linebacker Cale Johnson zoomed across the field to nail a Knight receiver for no-gain on first down. Senior Angus Davis stopped a receiver in his tracks to set up third and five and junior Isaac Ruiz nailed Castle’s All-Conference running back for a loss on third down. Castle drew a penalty on their fourth and long attempt and ultimately ended up punting.
Those would be Castle’s only plays from scrimmage in the first quarter of the game.
ANOTHER MISSED OPPORTUNITY
Brawdy connected with Gelhausen for a quick first down to move the Huskies up to the 30-yard line. Following a nine yard gain by senior T.J. Hankins, Brawdy picked up another first down with a quarterback keeper. When it appeared the drive might stall at midfield facing fourth down and two, the Knights stacked the line of scrimmage expecting a North run.
The Huskies took advantage of the defensive formation and Brawdy zipped a pass up the middle to Kaleb Harris that kept the drive alive and had North again knocking on the door of Castle’s end zone. Again, however, the opportunity was missed when the drive stalled four plays later as a Brawdy run came up an inch short of a first down on a chain measurement.
YET A THIRD DRIVE TO NOWHERE
The defense forced a ‘three-and-out’ punt for Castle and North took over at mid-field. Brawdy converted a third and two to put the ball inside the Castle 40 and then Hankins hammered away for a twelve yard pick up that had North inside the Castle 30 for the third time in the game.
Four plays later, the drive was over at the 23-yard line.
Three scoring opportunities had yielded zero points and they were chances that would haunt the Huskies throughout the remainder of the game.
THE DEFENSE BENDS
Sometimes it seems that games can hinge on a single play. This was one of those games.
The defense again bottled-up Castle as the Knights pounded away with running plays. When they correctly sniffed out a jet sweep to the Castle side of the field, the Husky defenders had plenty of people in the right spot to contain the play.
Senior Mitchell Happe appeared to have a Castle runner down to bring up third and long. The runner was falling and North defenders broke off their efforts to avoid being penalized for a late hit.
Except the whistle did not blow.
And the Castle runner took off, claiming that his knee had never touched the ground. Senior Kahlontaj “KJ” Bell won a foot race to prevent a touchdown on the play, but the damage was done. Facing first and goal at the six, Castle went up 7-0 two plays later.
ONE MORE ‘MISS’
Perhaps no play was more emblematic of the Huskies’ night than their final play of the half. After Castle’s kick off went out of bounds, North took over at their 35 with under four minutes to play and successfully drove to the Castle 35 yard line with 1:15 remaining on the clock and two time outs left. Brawdy dropped back to pass and connected with a receiver at the 25 yard line.
With timeouts remaining and a first down in the red zone, the Huskies would have one more chance to put points on the board before half.
Except the receiver fumbled the ball when he was tackled.
The first half dominance of the Huskies went for naught
SECOND HALF
Football fortunes can be fleeting. On a night when a grueling heat index hovered in the high nineties, Dame Fortune promptly left the North sidelines. The affects of fatigue can often impact mental processes as significantly as it does physical ones.
The Husky defense that had held up so strong in the first half showed signs of mental fatigue after the break.
Castle scored on their first play from scrimmage. Sophomore nose-tackle Delshan Davis fought off a double team block in the middle of the line and senior linebacker Mitchell Happe denied a runner any other option than to cut back and attempt to get outside for running space. Unfortunately, the defender assigned containment responsibilities had ventured too far inside to contain the runner and Castle’s All-Conference running back was ‘off to the races’. Two missed tackles along the sideline contributed to a 68-yard touchdown run. Junior Angelo St. Louis thwarted the extra point kick with a block from up the middle and the Huskies trailed 13-0
NOT SO SPECIAL TEAMS
The special teams play for North was less than sterling. When the Huskies ensuing possession resulted in a fourth down at their 18, a ten yard punt compounded the degree of difficulty for the defense. Delshan Davis and Cale Johnson stopped a runner on first down. Junior Ethan King and Angus Davis stopped a runner on second down, and Happe and senior Zane Hatt tackled a runner for loss on third down. When a fourth down pass fell incomplete, it appeared as though the Huskies had ‘righted-the-ship’ and would recover their momentum.
PLAYING IN THE TROPICS
It was truly the next few minutes of play that would show the affects of the tropical like temperatures.
· As North began to move the ball up field again, an open receiver dropped a pass that hit him in the hands and would have represented a 20-yard gain. When a manageable fourth down and short situation ensued, a false start penalty forced a punt.
· A simple ‘wheel route’ pass pattern—a play in which an inside slot receiver delays his trip down field and runs outside of the end—created confusion in the defensive backfield and left a receiver wide open with no defender within 20 yards of him. Only a desperation ‘grab’ prevented a score and one play later the Knights led 19-0.
· Brawdy had to leave the game in the ensuing possession because he was suffering from severe leg cramps.
All these issues were related to the mental and physical aspects of fatigue.
OH NO, NOT AGAIN
Despite the loss of Brawdy, the Huskies continued to move the ball against Castle. The North offensive line provided enough protection and space for sophomore Sam McKinney to step in and run the offense. The Huskies worked their way into Castle territory and when faced with fourth-and-one at the 40, it was McKinney who bulled his way behind a block by Mooney and Johnson to pick up the first down at the 38.
North appeared to be ready to cut into the deficit when again the affects of the night continued to be felt.
· A wide open receiver dropped a McKinney pass in his hands at the 22-yard line.
· A ‘fresh’ lineman substituted into the game committed a false start penalty.
· A receiver dropped another McKinney pass at the 25-yard line as he went down.
· A defender stripped the ball from a runner on fourth down.
These were not things that normally happen to a team in such rapid-fire succession.
FOURTH QUARTER STARTS BADLY FINISHES STRONG
North began the fourth quarter with the ball near midfield trailing by three scores. A comeback would be difficult but not insurmountable. Hope still remained among the faithful.
McKinney lined up in the shotgun formation and had plenty of protection as he dropped back to pass on first down. Streaking up the middle of the field he spotted an open receiver at the Castle 35-yard line. A completed pass, given the open runner’s momentum, would certainly have carried the ball down inside the Castle 20. McKinney delivered a strike.
And the ball glanced off the receiver’s hands straight up into the air.
Into the hands of a Castle defender.
The defender returned the ball deep into North territory and in less than a minute the Huskies trailed 25-0.
TWO LATE SCORES
Brawdy returned to the game and offense recovered a bit of its ‘mojo’. Right guard Zane Hatt delivered an enormous pancake block and sprung Hankins for a nine-yard gain. On second down, right tackle Timmy Dixon deposited the defensive end somewhere near the sideline with a huge block, Cale Johnson wiped out the linebacker, and Hankins rambled into the secondary for a first down at the Castle 44.
Junior Angelo St. Louis was inserted at running back to give Hankins a rest. St. Louis did much more than that.
In a play that contained a text book demonstration of cross blocking between Hatt, Dixon, and Johnson, St. Louis got to run through a hole the size of a tractor. As impressive as that display of teamwork and precision was, it was perhaps the end of the run that was the greatest. Dashing into the open, the junior simply ‘ran over’ a defender at the 30, stiff armed another would-be tackler at the 20, and then raced to the flag at the corner of the end zone.
A noticeably limping Brawdy had difficulty with the snap on the extra point and a rushed kick went wide left. North trailed 25-6 with 8:26 to play.
Delshan Davis and Timmy Dixon stuffed runners for loss and North got the ball back with still six minutes to play near midfield.
St. Louis sampled the effective blocking of senior Gunnar Sales at left guard on first down and blew through a hole into the secondary for an 18 yard pick up. When the Huskies appeared to be stalling again deep in Castle territory, Brawdy rolled to his left and threw across his body (a pass that is exceptionally difficult to throw) and hit a leaping St. Louis at the 18-yard line for a first down in the red zone.
Two plays later, Brawdy connected with Cale Johnson on a play action pass straight up the middle of the field and the Huskies had their final score of the game.
The Husky defense was unable to get the ball back and North lost 25-12.
STATISTICAL DOMINATION--SCOREBOARD LOSS
North dominated nearly every measure of the game. 30 minutes and 15 seconds of possession to just 17:45 for Castle. 70 plays to just 39. 17 first downs to eight. The Husky defense held the Knights to just a single third down conversion in eight attempts.
And still North lost.
Mental errors, dropped passes, poor special teams play, and the affects brought on by the terrible heat and humidity played significant roles in the loss. The Huskies showed signs of great promise for the season ahead but still suffered a defeat.
