Game Recap

UNFORTUNATE EVENTS COMBINE IN HUSKIES 49-14 LOSS

A series of unfortunate events that began with a fumble at the North 27 and ended with a pass deflecting from Husky hands into the waiting arms of Central defender led to a 49-14 defeat for the Huskies.  Senior night was spoiled and a chance at a share of the SIAC conference title went out the window with a second ‘pick six’ during the game's second quarter.

CENTRAL STAKES A 13-0 LEAD

Fate took over early in Friday night’s game.  A fourth down gamble deep in North territory went terribly wrong when a fumble gave Central the ball at the North 27.  It took the Bears just three plays to tally their first score of the game.

After a Husky drive stalled just past midfield when a fourth and six pass fell incomplete, it looked like Central was running ‘down hill’ as they powered their way to the end zone in just five plays.  A bad snap on the extra point was the only thing that spoiled the Bears’ near-perfect first six minutes of the game.

THE HUSKIES FIGHT BACK

Down two scores, the Huskies summoned the echoes of victories-past and produced a touchdown on the ensuing drive.  Senior J.T. Skinner broke into the open for a 20 yard gain into Central territory and fellow senior Dylan McKinney escaped double coverage for another 20 yard gain to the Bears’ 22 yard line.  From there the Huskies hammered their way to pay dirt on five successive running plays with sophomore Ethan Brawdy gaining the final three yards.  With a minute to play in the quarter, North was ‘back in the game’ at 13-7.

NORTH DODGES A BULLET

On the night, Central would only pass the ball three times.  After a squibbed kick gave them the ball at their 41 yard line, five running plays had them back in ‘the red zone’ at North’s 19.  Their quarterback found an open receiver at the ten yard line and the receiver turned up field to run toward the end zone.  Junior Brody Tichenor and Tanner Jackson managed to strip the ball from the receiver as they tackled him at the four and the ball squirted into the end zone.  Sophomore Achilles Johnson recovered it and North got the ball at their 20 yard line.

HIGH WATER MARK FOR THE HUSKIES

Dame Fortune appeared to have smiled upon the green and white and the Huskies moved the ball back up field.  Brawdy broke free on a keeper around left end and picked up 24 yards.  Once inside Central territory, the Huskies drove to the Bears’ 24.  With the ball, a first down in front of Central’s goal posts, and the very real possibility of gaining the lead in a few plays, Husky hopes were flying high.  The crowd was into the moment and it appeared that North had overcome early miscues and developed the momentum it needed to win.

A run gained two yards and three passes fell incomplete.

Central took over on downs at their 22 yard line and drove down field toward North's end zone.

A BAD TWO MINUTES AND THIRTY SECONDS

At 4:15 to play in the half, the score was 13-7 in favor of Central.

At 4:06 the Bears scored on a ten-yard touchdown run to make the score 20-7

After North returned a kickoff to the 32, a third down pass was intercepted by the Bears and run back for a touchdown.  That made the score 27-7 with 2:14 remaining in the period.

At the 1:35 mark, a pass deflected out of the hands of a North receiver and into the waiting grasp of a Central defender who ran it back for another touchdown to bring the score to 34-7.

In just over two-and-a-half minutes of game time, Central scored 21 unanswered points and for all intents and purposes the game was over.

HUSKIES ADD A LATE TOUCHDOWN

When Central scored on their first possession of the second half, the remainder of the game was played with a running clock.  North did manage a touchdown on the final play of the game when Brawdy converted a fourth-and-goal with a six-yard run.  North was humbled again in the North Side Trophy game by a final score of 49-14.  The Huskies have been outscored 149-28 in their last three matches against the Central Bears.
