Game Recap

WILDCATS OUTLAST HUSKIES 45-27 AT BOWL

In a game that had been tied until late in the third quarter, the Mater Dei Wildcats wore down the Huskies for a 45-27 victory.  Capoleton Presswood’s 3 yard touchdown run a few minutes after halftime knotted the score at 21 but over the course of the next 10 minutes of play North would fall behind.

INITIAL SCORES

After a long run on their initial possession brought the Wildcats to the North 35, it looked like the scoring threat was ended when a runner was dropped five yards deep in the backfield by defensive tackle Gage Sales.  Unfortunately on the desperate third and long pass that sailed out of bounds over the head of a Mater Dei receiver, a North defender was called for pass interference.   The Wildcats got a new set of downs at the North 25 as a result.

Still the defense stiffened and looked like it might weather the storm when Mater Dei faced fourth and nine at the 24.  The Wildcats lined up three receivers wide left and the Husky defenders looked to be in ‘Cover Two’ defense.  The matchup caused two North defenders to have to switch off in their coverage of a receiver who was running full stride down the field.  The switch resulted in a 24 yard touchdown pass for Mater Dei.

Sales led the way in North’s answer to the 7-0 deficit by pulling from his offensive guard slot on the Huskies’ first play.  The big junior rambled down the line and trap blocked a defender that opened up a hole for senior Dylan McKinney to run through.  The hole was as wide as Sales and all McKinney needs is a crease in the defense to run through.  48 yards later, North had a first down at the Mater Dei 32.

A couple running plays by quarterback Ethan Brawdy and senior JT Skinner resulted in a first and goal at the 7.  With McKinney in the backfield, Mauricos Mayes and Adam Goebel sealed off the right side of the defense while Jacob Guest blocked the end out of the way.  McKinney made like a jack rabbit and darted through the hole in the defense, slammed a stiff arm into the face of the linebacker, cut to his right, and high stepped into the end zone.  Alex Ozete’s kick tied the score at 7.

“DÉJÀ VU ALL OVER AGAIN”Yogi Berra

A pair of running plays for big gains soon had the Wildcats back in North territory.  When they reached the Husky 27, Mater Dei lined up in a very familiar formation.  With the quarterback in the shotgun, three wide outs were split to the left.  North lined up again in what appeared to be Cover Two.  Again the switch off occurred when the outside receiver cut off his route and the cornerback trailed the play.   As New York Yankee Hall of Famer, Yogi Berra was famous for saying, “it was like déjà vu all over again.”

The Mater Dei receiver caught the ball in the end zone before a North defender could catch up and the Huskies trailed 14-7.

BRAWDY ‘COMES OF AGE’

Where there had been a certain amount of lightning strikes to the first scores, the next one came as the result of an epic fourteen play drive that spanned 80 yards.  Three separate times North overcame ‘third and long’ situations to sustain its drive to the end zone.  If there is a moment in time where a player ‘comes of age’, this particular drive had to be that moment for sophomore Ethan Brawdy.  A little over a month ago, he was starting his first varsity football game.  Tonight he was matched up against the #2 rated team in Indiana in their class and a school North has not beaten in 10 years.  He was going toe-to-toe on their turf in Reitz Bowl.

Facing third and fourteen at North’s 16, he got the ball to senior Alex Smith in a position where he could run and pick up 15 yards for a first down.  On third and 6 at the 35, Brawdy tossed the ball to McKinney for a 7 yard gain and a first down.  On fourth and 6 at the 11 yard line, North’s drive looked like it might stall.

Brawdy lined up in the shot gun and on the snap rolled to his right.  He had to evade a rusher and circled a little bit deeper behind the line than the play called for.  As the Wildcat lunged for him, he planted his foot and spotted Smith running toward the back corner of the end zone.  The sophomore showed more poise than his age would suggest, aimed his throw, and released a pass that was perfectly timed, perfectly spiraled, and landed where only Smith could reach it.

The score was tied again and North was definitely “in” this ballgame.

‘BLOWN CALL’ ENABLES MATER DEI HALFTIME LEAD

Mater Dei added a touchdown just before halftime when they received the ‘boost’ of a blown call by the official.  On third and long at the North 28, the Wildcats threw the ball to the right sideline.  Repeated viewing of the game film revealed that the receiver had the ball knocked loose from his hands and never had possession of the ball as it skittered loose out of bounds on the sideline.  Nonetheless, the indifferent referee signaled a completed catch and the Wildcats’ drive stayed alive long enough for them to score with scant seconds left in the half.

CRENSHAW ‘STRIKES’!

The opening kickoff of the third quarter provided fireworks aplenty.  Junior Delavion Crenshaw settled under the kick at the four yard line and quickly made his way up the right sideline.  McKinney had come from the left side return spot and led the way as Crenshaw gained a full head of steam.  The North return team mowed down three of the coverage team and McKinney drilled another.  Crenshaw’s speed carried him into a crowd of defenders and then through them.  They did manage to break his stride and as a result a lone defender angled across the field and he knocked the North return man out of bounds at the 14 yard line.  Crenshaw’s 82 yard return put the Huskies in position to even the score.

If Crenshaw got them to the threshold, the ‘family Sales’ knocked down the door.  On third and goal from the three, with Presswood taking the hand off behind them, the elder Sales brother, Gage, drove across the defender in front of him like a road grader.  Simultaneously, the younger brother, Gunnar, pancaked the middle linebacker.  Presswood had only the safety to tangle with and dove forward into the end zone to tie the score at 21.

For North, it would be the high water mark of their upset bid.

NORTH WEARS DOWN; MISCUES DON’T HELP

Mater Dei responded with a 13 play drive that netted them a 34 yard field goal to retake the lead.  The effects of a hot, muggy night would begin to take their toll on the Huskies.  When North got the ball back, some starters who had gone both ways on offense and defense were winded and needed a break.  The Huskies went three-and-out and punted the ball away.

The Huskies had moved McKinney into the defensive secondary along with other changes on defense after allowing the second touchdown pass in the first quarter.  As the game progressed, McKinney’s efforts on both sides on the hot night resulted in his sitting this defensive possession out.

On first down from their 37, with two wide outs to the right, Mater Dei brought a man in motion to flood the right side with three receivers.  On the snap, North’s safety committed to covering the motion man and it left a linebacker in man-to-man coverage on Mater Dei’s fasted receiver.  The speed differential between the two was too great, the Wildcat caught the ball at the North 40, and he raced away to the end zone.  North trailed by ten.

While North experienced a three and out on its next possession, a savage first down tackle for loss by Gage Sales followed by a holding penalty against Mater Dei forced a punt by the Wildcats.  Unfortunately, the punt was mishandled and Mater Dei recovered at the Husky 43.  Seven consecutive running plays hammered into the line and produced a touchdown for the Wildcats.  North trailed by seventeen.

HANKINS MAKES IT A NIGHT OF MANY RETURNS

The loan remaining bright spot of the evening was sophomore T.J. Hankins dramatic 80 yard touchdown on the ensuing kickoff.  Dancing nimbly through a crowd of defenders along the North sideline, he ducked under one tackler, brushed off another, broke free at midfield, and simply outran the opposition on his way to the end zone.  Mater Dei blocked the extra point attempt and North trailed 38-27.

But they were simply out of gas.

The Wildcats won and their consecutive wins streak against North remains alive.  On the night, however, the Huskies witnessed the ‘coming of age’ of their young quarterback and were introduced to exciting new ‘weapons’ who can contribute big plays.

This was not an easy win for Mater Dei.

The Huskies are coming along.
