Game Recap

HUSKIES DOWN ROCKETS IN 57-6 ROUT

In a game eerily comparable to 2015, the Huskies jumped out to a big lead early against the Broad Ripple Rockets and coasted to a 57-6 victory.  There was no facet of the game that the much larger and much better executing North squad did not dominate.

FIVE POSSESSIONS, FIVE TOUCHDOWNS

The opening possession of the game told the story of the differences in the two squads.  A speedy return man brought the kickoff back to the 25 yard line for the Rockets and an end run moved the ball to the 29.  On second down junior linebacker Andrew Hendrickson dropped a runner for a loss in the backfield and fellow junior Eric McClain did the same on third down.  Facing fourth and twelve, Broad Ripple went to punt the ball away but sophomore Drew Routh flashed in from the side and blocked the kick.  McClain recovered at the five yard line.  Three plays later senior D’Amonte Sylvain recorded North’s first rushing touchdown of the season.

The second Broad Ripple possession fared only slightly better.  Senior David Roach knocked down a third down pass (narrowly missing a ‘Pick-Six’ opportunity) and the Rockets ensuing punt went just 12 yards before falling out of bounds.  The Huskies took over at the Broad Ripple 42 and senior quarterback Shawn Coane took over the show for the remainder of the first half.

COANE ASSUMES CONTROL

On first down, Coane carried the ball around left end on an option play and raced 33 yards to the nine.  It was the first of six such long runs that the quarterback would make over the next 15 minutes of play.  This one led to a seven yard score by Daniel Sellers and the Huskies went up 14-0 just six minutes into the game.

The third, fourth, and fifth possessions told a similar story with Coane dashing 26 yards for a touchdown to start the second quarter, rambling 34 yards for a score with five minutes to go in the half, and finishing off the scoring with an 8 yard run to the end zone as the half ended.  His night concluded with the amazing line of 7 carries for 138 yards (nearly a 20 yard per carry average) and three touchdowns in just one half of play.

The Husky offensive line made short work of the Rockets on most plays but when they did not, Coane was more than capable of making electric moves with his fast feet.  The 34 yard score came on a play in which it appeared that the Rockets had accurately gauged an option play and stacked a group of defenders that left no hope of Coane gaining yards.  With jack-rabbit like moves, the nimble footed quarterback reversed his field, gave ground, quick stepped around defenders, and raced to the end zone untouched.  In this half of football, no play was over until Shawn Coane decided it was over.

It was an impressive display of running that may have only seen its match on the part of the North defense.

STREET & COMPANY DOMINATE…AGAIN

Where the lightning qualities of the offense were on display in the first half, the thunder came from the Husky defense.  The Rockets’ third possession saw senior Cage Street record a quarterback sack on first down, fellow senior Adra Armstead tackle a runner for loss on second down, and Street block a pass at the line of scrimmage on third down.

The fourth possession saw sophomore Braylen Neighbors storm through the line on third down and drop a runner for loss forcing the team to punt.

BACK TO BACK GREAT PLAYS

The fifth possession witnessed two great plays.  McClain nearly took a handoff away between the quarterback and running back and the result was a five yard loss for Broad Ripple.  On third and 15, Street fell back into coverage and when the defense hurried the quarterback into an errant throw, he picked the ball out of the sky like a hungry punt-returner and dashed 26 yards to the end zone.  Not willing to be denied his first varsity touchdown, Street bowled the last remaining defender over on his way to six points.

The sixth possession was marred by a roughing the kicker penalty on a fourth down punt, but Street then intercepted his second pass of the game on the ensuing play and returned the ball to the Broad Ripple 29 to set up a Husky score.

The seventh possession began with senior Braedon Huber tackling a runner for loss and junior Isaac Conger and Street sharing a tackle for loss on second down.  The possession was again extended for the Rockets when another roughing the kicker penalty was called on fourth down. Junior Caleb Hague then stripped a runner of the ball causing a fumble and senior Courtland Darrett recovered the fumble to set up North’s final score of the first half.

All told, the Huskies led 41-0 at the end of the second quarter and the second half belonged to the reserves for the most part.

SECOND HALF SPARKS

The North faithful were rewarded with a nifty bit of running by senior receiver Tyreak Cogdell on the Huskies second play of the third quarter.  Taking a ‘jet sweep’ pitch around right end, Cogdell shook off a tackle attempt by the opposing defender and then side stepped the corner back.  He tip-toed along the sideline and ‘turned on the afterburners’ as he raced 54 yards to his first varsity touchdown.

Perhaps the only downside to the evening was the four penalties for over 40 yards that the second team offense ran up in the third quarter.  The squad was able to avoid issues, however, when an inexperienced Broad Ripple defender misplayed a punt return and junior Spencer Snellings recovered the muffed return.

UNDERCLASSMEN PERFORM

After the Husky offense stalled at the 2 yard line of Broad Ripple early in the fourth quarter, sophomore defensive tackle Braylen Neighbors bulled his way through the line and wrapped up the quarterback in the end zone for a safety.  North led 50-0 after that score and the Rockets did a free kick from their 20 yard line.  Facing a short field, sophomore quarterback A.J. Wheeler ran for 16 yards and completed a pass to fellow sophomore Grant Mass for 13 more to set up first and goal.  Two plays later, junior Jaydiss Butler capped off the North scoring with an 8 yard cut-back run up the middle.

LESSONS LEARNED

Good teams are supposed to win games against competition like Broad Ripple by large amounts, even with junior varsity teams playing large chunks of the second half.  To that end, North achieved that goal.  Friday night’s victory was not necessarily a test of skill in such an unbalanced contest, but it was an opportunity to gain game experience for players who have as yet been untested.  Again, to that end, North achieved that goal.

Both lines excelled.  Backs got chances to shine.  Three different kickers succeeded in game situations.

Preparations for the SIAC schedule are over.  It’s time for the Huskies to go to work.
