Game Recap

REITZ RUNS THROUGH THE HUSKIES IN 49-20 NORTH LOSS

The Reitz Panthers left little doubt as to how they earned their Number One ranking in Class 4A during a 49-20 win over the North Huskies--they run over other teams.  Within one minute of the opening kickoff, the Reitz quarterback sprinted 51 yards for a touchdown.  On the night a variety of Panther running backs would AVERAGE nearly ELEVEN yards every time that they touched the ball.  The Husky front seven was no match for the superior blocking schemes as executed by the Hilltoppers.

Given that the defensive backfield was having to try and close gaps in the defensive interior, when Reitz did throw the ball utilizing play-action (wherein the quarterback fakes a handoff to a running back before dropping back to pass) the Husky defenders were put in a position of having to catch up to receivers from behind.  As a result, Reitz completed 73% of their passes (the highest completion percentage that North has allowed in several seasons) and averaged nearly TEN yards every time they dropped back to pass.

By comparison, the Huskies managed a respectable 4.7 yards per rushing attempt and were able to put a pair of first half touchdowns on the board, but it was hardly enough.  Reitz led 28-13 at half and the game quickly got out of hand in the third quarter.  A major culprit was the Huskies inability to complete any of the six passes they attempted after halftime.  Because of that, while the Panthers were scoring touchdowns, North produced three punts on three possessions.

The officials moved to a "running clock" when North was forced to punt for the third time in the third quarter while trailing 42-13.    Reitz put their reserves in after scoring a touchdown on their first possession of the final stanza and that move allowed North to drive downfield for a final score as the game ended.
