Game Recap

NORTH BEATS PAOLI 28-0 IN 1ST SHUTOUT SINCE '08

A road game against a smaller opponent that hasn’t lost at home since the Bush administration and had won 39 of their last 45 games is often referred to as a “Trap” game.  If the larger school isn’t ready to play when they step off the bus, they can find themselves in a “Trap” and get beaten by a smaller opponent.  North evaded the “Trap” on Friday night in Paoli and shutout the Rams 28-0 behind three touchdowns by Du’vante Lane.

READY TO PLAY

It appeared that the entire town of Paoli was present in one form or another at Cook Field Friday evening.  Pre-game activities celebrating breast cancer awareness had drawn what appeared to be a capacity crowd to the home stands and to the tailgate parties in the parking lot.  It was a carnival atmosphere and the hosts appeared confident in their purple and (yellow) gold uniforms.

Unfortunately for them, the Huskies showed up “Ready To Play” from the moment that they stepped off the bus.  With the coaching staff enforcing a “helmets on” policy on the field during pre-game warm ups, the Green & White played the part of an imposing visitor.  It was apparent from the speed that the team ran through drills and the crisp sound of shoulder pads that the Huskies had their game faces on.

QUALITY OPPONENT

The Paoli Rams returned not one, but TWO players with All-State honors from 2010.  Their safety/wide receiver was an Associated Press 1st team All-State player in 2A and their fullback/linebacker Captain was a 1st Team 2A Junior Class All-State player by the Indiana Football Coaches Association.  The Rams were 6-1 entering the game and had three times this season scored 50 or more points.

OPENING DRIVE SCORE

With game time temperatures in the low 70’s, senior Roland Eldridge returned the opening kick-off to the 30 yard line. A pair of Blake Howell runs off left tackle generated a 1st down at the 40 and QB Max Mooney broke the huddle and set up the team in an I formation.  Following a long count, Mooney play action faked the ball to the full back, dropped back three steps, and looked down the right hand sideline for WR Ty Pauley.

While the Rams were 6-1 and had some talented players, it became apparent on this play that they had not yet seen the likes of the “speed” against which they were up against on Friday night.

Pauley had easily gotten behind his man and was streaking away on a fly pattern in front of the North bench when Mooney let fly with the pass.  Only the All-State safety playing the angle allowed the Rams to prevent a touchdown and Pauley was pushed out of bounds at the Paoli 20 following a 40 yard gain.

With the Rams now playing “loose” along the line of scrimmage in order to keep enough backs deep to cover North’s receivers, North hammered away with three running plays.  On the third one, Howell took an option pitch around right end, side stepped a would-be defender at the three yard line and dove past another defender into the end zone.  Zac Turi’s extra-point kick made the score 7-0 with just three minutes gone in the game.

INITIAL SUCCESS FOLLOWED BY EPIC FAIL

Paoli ran a double wing-back, option offense much like the Air Force Academy has run for years.  They seldom pass and usually bring a wing back in motion as a mis-direction running threat.  They started at their 24 following the kick off and had some initial success with their option.  They gained 25 yards in just four plays and moved the ball to mid-field.

Another trait of the Air Force Academy offense is the use of low blocking techniques called “chop” blocks.  The wing backs and the linemen often dive low against a defender to get at his ankles and try to drop him.  There are areas on the field where such blocks are legal and there are areas on the field where they are illegal.  On this night, Paoli would be whistled multiple times for illegal blocking techniques.

With a 2nd and 1 at the 49, they fell victim to the first of those illegal blocking calls and it effectively stalled the drive.  On 3rd and 11 from the 39, Paoli completed their lone pass of the game—a bubble screen to the right hand side.

Unfortunately for the Rams, LB Drew Watters read the play perfectly and tackled the receiver for a seven yard loss to set up 4th and 18 at the 32 yard line.

What followed next dictated events for the remainder of the 1st quarter.  With Paoli In punt formation, the snap from the center sailed over the top of the punter’s head and rolled back to the goal line.  Inexplicably, the punter grabbed the ball at the three and simply kneeled down rather than try to run with the ball.

UNEXPECTED TOUGHNESS

Facing 1st and Goal from the three, the game was barely six minutes old and North was threatening to turn it into a rout.  The Rams toughened up, however and stopped Eldridge on a dive on first down, threw Mooney for a loss on a 2nd down option play, and broke up a pass on third down.

With Howell taking a handoff from Mooney in the Pistol formation on 4th and goal from the 6, the running back lost another yard and Paoli took over on downs.

NORTH D’LINE TAKES OVER

Paoli committed to the running game and converted a 3rd down to gain some breathing room in front of their goal post.  At that point, the defensive line began to close down gaps and the linebackers cut off the perimeter.

On 1st down, a quarterback run around end gained but two yards before LB Brandon Dickens dropped him dead in his tracks.  On 2nd down Blake Howell dropped the wingback for a 1 yard loss on a reverse. On 3rd down, DT Teddy Wilbourn blew threw the line and sacked the quarterback for a four yard loss.

Paoli was forced to punt again from deep in their own territory and a 30 yard kick with no return gave North the ball at the Paoli 45 yard line as the quarter ended.

SECOND QUARTER

The botched punt play early in the game had created a game of “field position” that North was fated to win.  Paoli could not match up with the physical nature of the Huskies and, given enough opportunities from good field position, North was going to score.  It was a certainty.

Howell got that “certainty” rolling with an 18 yard run up the middle on first down.  With C Dylan Simmons and G Sam Jones opening a crease, Howell came face to face with both of Paoli’s All-State players—Howell won the contest.  Blowing past the linebacker’s outstretched arms, he quick cut his way past the safety and very nearly broke free for a touchdown.  Only a quick grasp of his ankle tripped him up at the 11 yard line.

DU’VANTE’S FIRST

Max Mooney ran the option to his left on 1st down and appeared to be stopped behind the line of scrimmage until he twisted free, turned the corner, and drove his way to the one yard line.  An offsides penalty momentarily delayed the Huskies, but Howell gained most of the penalty yardage pack with an option to the right hand side on 2nd down.  With the ball at the 3 yard line, Mooney handed the ball to the full back, Du’vante Lane, and he bulled his way into the end zone behind a big block by Damon ByarsTuri’s kick made the score 14-0 with 10:10 to play in the half.

TO THE AIR—FOR A WHILE

With North dominating the line of scrimmage, Paoli mixed in more mis-direction and passing plays on its next possession.  An option left gained 8 yards and a rollout option pass-or-run play gained 13.  With the ball at the 45, the Rams looked like they might have found some answers to the Huskies tenacious 8-in-the-box defense.

DE “BigMike Johnson batted down a pass attempt on 1st down, Ty Pauley stopped a reverse for a one yard loss, and a Jay’von Gilmore blanketed a receiver on 3rd down to force a punt.  Just as quickly as the Rams thought they had solved North’s defense, the Huskies’ athleticism slammed the door.

With 8 minutes remaining in the half, the Huskies took to the air.  On 2nd down at the North 22, Mooney hit Lane with a short pass in the right hand flat and TE Drew Watters made a ferocious block that sprang Lane and allowed him to gain 18 yards to the 40 yard line.  Husky speed was apparent on the next play when WR Heath Spindler got open behind the secondary but the ball glanced off his finger tips and fell incomplete.  Watters got bumped on a pass play over the middle on 3rd down, but no flag was thrown and P Antwan Ogburn was called upon for his only punt of the evening.

Ogburn, for his part, made his sole appearance as a punter count for something.  Despite a low trajectory, the ball touched down before it had gone 25 yards and then bounced along for another 20 yards before being downed at the Paoli 13.  The 44 yard effort was the longest punt for North since the Henderson County game.

GROUND ASSAULT

Paoli chose to grind out yardage after that with a deliberate, ball control offense made up of dives and quick options.  It appeared that they recognized that their best defense was a strong offense and throughout the remainder of the game, they ate up the clock in an attempt to keep North’s offense off the field.  Often the play clock ran to the final seconds before a snap and the pace of the game slowed considerably when the Rams had the ball.

A ten play drive with 7 of the plays being keeper runs by the quarterback netted just 27 yards in over five minutes of play.  Regardless, the drive stalled at their 40 and they were forced to punt and Eldridge returned the kick to the 35 yard line for the Huskies.

A PICK FOR A PICK

With 90 seconds to play in the half, Mooney hit WR Brock Underwood with a slant pass for a six yard gain.  The Huskies went “back to the well” with a play that had worked so well on their opening drive and Mooney threw deep for Pauley.  This time, however, the All-State safety was providing ‘over the top’ coverage and the slightly underthrown ball was picked off at the Paoli 32.  A personal foul on North after the play gave the Rams their first opportunity inside North territory of the evening.

While Paoli garnered 14 yards up the middle on 1st down, the clock was running down and they were forced to throw the ball.  Pauley defended one pass and another was over thrown.  An attempted quarterback draw gained nothing and there was time for one more play at the North 38 yard line.

The Rams threw deep and Howell intercepted the pass at the 2 yard line despite a holding penalty (the flag was thrown) on the Ram receiver.  Howell danced through would be tacklers and was across the 40 yard line before losing footing on a cutback or he may have gone the distance.  The half ended on the play and the score remained North 14 Paoli 0.

THIRD QUARTER

As they had in the second quarter, Paoli remained committed to running the ball AND running time off the clock. They converted two third downs on a 12 play opening drive that ate up nearly 7 minutes of playing time.  They crossed midfield despite the beating that the North front line was administering to their quarterback and the yardage was hard earned.

They could little afford a mistake.

When Damon Byars smashed the quarterback for no-gain on 3rd and 4 at the North 33, it set up 4th down.  The opponent quarterback was slow to get up and it possibly influenced the next play.  Going for it on 4th and 4, the handoff to their All-State full back was sloppy, the ball hit the ground and Drew Watters recovered the fumble.

That drive would prove to be the “high water” mark for Paoli on the night.12 running plays gained 44 yards and exhausted their line and their backfield.  Paoli would not threaten again.

WEARING DOWN A WEAKENED OPPONENT

If the Rams thought their 1st offensive possession of the second-half was tough, they were doubly weakened by what occurred next.  North set forth on a 13 play drive that was by definition “smash mouth” football.

Against a weakening foe, the Huskies mixed runs and passes designed to wear out their opponent further.  Howell went off tackle for a few yards before Mooney found Watters on a play-action pass over the middle for 14 yards.  Then North switched to “The Wildcat Offense” and Ty Pauley slammed away a Paoli’s run defense for awhile.

After moving the ball into Ram territory, Mooney re-entered the game and treated the Paoli backfield to a “wind sprint” in case they weren’t tired enough already.  Recalling that Heath Spindler had broken open deep behind the secondary in the 2nd quarter, North repeated the play with the same result.  The speedy receiver got separation along the sideline and Mooney’s 40 yard throw again glanced off the receiver’s hands.

The play had its desire affect, however, and the Rams were standing with their hands on their knees as they prepared for the next play.  Mooney ran two keepers for eight yards, Howell hammered away off left guard for nine more, and “BigMike Johnson rammed off-tackle for four to the 19 yard line as the third quarter ended.

FOURTH QUARTER

On 2nd and 6 from the 19, Johnson ran up the middle between Simmons and Jones, ran head first into the All-State defender, did a text-book spin move, and gained 11 yards to the 8.  The defense was definitely back on its heels and only a North miscue could stop the drive.

It did.

Howell re-entered the game on 1st and goal and fumbled but recovered the ball at the line of scrimmage.  On the ensuing play, Mooney’s handoff to Lane somehow ended with the ball on the ground and Paoli recovered the fumble at the 8 yard line.

HATFIELD MAKES HIS PRESENCE KNOWN

Trailing by two scores with 10:44 to play in the game and tiring visibly, Paoli faced desperate times.  If the turnover boosted their confidence, that emotion was quickly deflated when another illegal block penalty wiped out a 10 yard gain on first down.

Their weary quarterback gained six on 1st & 14 from the four yard line, but his next effort sealed Paoli’s fate.  Dropping back to the goal line to pass on second down, he threw the ball over the middle and over looked LB Zach Hatfield.  Number 5 for North intercepted the ball at the 20 and made like a fullback as he ran cross the field on his way to the 10 yard line.

DU’VANTE’S SECOND

Pauley ran the Wildcat and gained four yards on 1st down and scored on 2nd down.  A holding call wiped out the score, however, and the ball was placed at the 11 yard line following the penalty.

Mooney returned to the game and the team lined up in the I formation.  Faking a play-action hand off, Mooney rolled out and quickly threw back over the middle to Lane.  Catching the ball, Lane was hit at the 2 yard line but refused to go down.  He spun out of the defender’s grasp and dove into the end zone.  Turi’s extra-point split the uprights to make the score 21-0

BACK UP QUARTERBACK

Paoli’s starting quarterback was pulled from the game at this point and his replacement gained 9 yards on two plays to set up 3rd and 1 at the Ram 27.  Lane, playing defensive end, blew past the tackle and stopped the ball carrier for a loss to force another Paoli punt.

With just under six minutes to play, North ran the ball 8 consecutive plays to run the clock down.  The biggest play came on 1st down at the Husky 38 yard line.  Johnson took a handoff and went around right end for 26 yards to the Paoli 36 yard line.  While the drive ultimately stalled at the 26 yard line, there was only 1:38 on the clock when the Rams got the ball back.

DU’VANTE’S THIRD

On their 1st play from scrimmage, Johnson stormed in from his end position and nearly took  the handoff.  As it was, he knocked the ball loose and Du’vante Lane—flying in from the opposite end—scooped up the fumble and ran 27 yards untouched for the game’s final score and his third touchdown of the night..  Turi’s fourth extra-point kick lit the scoreboard as 28-0.

1ST SHUTOUT SINCE 2008

The Huskies had their first defensive shut out since 2008 when they beat arch-rival Central 27-0.  North limited Paoli to 125 yards of total offense on the night and forced 4 turnovers while committing just two.  What had seemed like a possible “trap” game had actually turned into a contest in which the Huskies honed their skills against a determined, but under manned opponent.

This Husky club takes very little for granted and appears on the Up-Swing as they head for a show down with Central Friday night.

This past weekend’s upset of Reitz by Bosse presents North with the very real prospect of a chance to gain a share of 2nd place in the City standings with a victory over the Bears.  That would represent a very marked gain over the prior three seasons and point to a program on the rise.
