Game Recap

NORTH LOSES 7-6 THRILLER TO REITZ

Despite carrying a 6-0 lead until the final seconds of the third quarter, North fell to Reitz for the fifth consecutive season at Central Stadium on Saturday night.  The progress that the ’11 Huskies have made over the course of the season was apparent throughout the game.

The “little” things that have hounded the Huskies over the course of the season looked to be finally brought under control.

·         The team punted four times without noticeable difficulties.

·         No kickoffs were returned beyond the 35 yard line.

·         No snaps between the quarterback and the center were mishandled.

·         North found an “impact” player to put opposite ‘BigMike Johnson at defensive end.

That last part would nearly prove to be the difference in the game.

IMPRESSIVE FIRST QUARTER

If there was any doubt that the Huskies were at the stadium to play tough, hard nosed football, those doubts were dispelled in the game’s earliest minutes.

North won the coin toss and deferred to the second half.  Reitz chose to receive the ball and, for the most part, it was the only time that they had an advantage on the Huskies throughout the evening.

With the ball at their 30, Reitz looked like they wanted to “out quick” the Huskies.  Operating from a no-huddle offense, their play calling indicated that they were thinking they could get outside of North’s perimeter defense and turn upfield.

The reality was that they were mistaken.

On 2nd down, athletic DT Teddy Wilbourn pursued an outside sweep and brought the runner down after just a two yard gain.  After that, rangy LB Brandon Dickens slid out into the flat and narrowly missed picking off a pass.  North was covering the width of the field and closing down corridors to the Panthers.  On fourth down, a good rush and a poor snap combined to cause the Reitz punter to hurry his kick and the Huskies got good field position at the North 43.

TARGET:  PAULEY

North hammered away at a stiff Reitz defense.  On 3rd and 5 at the 48, QB Max Mooney hooked up with WR Ty Pauley on a hook pass along the right hashmark for a nine yard gain that kept the drive alive.

When Mooney was sacked on second down, North faced 3rd and 14.  To make matters worse, the Huskies then committed their only 1st half penalty with a backfield in motion penalty that made the down 3rd and 19 yards to go for a 1st down.

The Panthers must have seen the opportunity as the right moment to “send a message” because on the ensuing snap they sent “everybody and the kitchen sink” after the quarterback on an all-out blitz.  With North in “The Pistol” formation, Mooney barely had time to react before the Panthers were forcing him from the safety of the pocket.   Taking a quick step to his right, he tossed a pass deep to his right and down the sideline.

Pauley, for his part, had gotten off the line quickly and taken a step to his right before cutting straight up field.  Within three paces he had separation between himself and the defender and was in perfect position to haul in the pass as it drifted down.  Running along the sideline, he stepped out of bounds just after catching the ball on a 32 yard gain.  North had converted a rare “3rd and 19” and had served notice that they had “come to play” with the #2 ranked team in the state.

FIRST FIELD GOAL

A run by Blake Howell and a short gain by Mooney had the ball inside the 10 yard line but the drive appeared to falter when a 3rd down pass to Pauley glanced off his hands and fell incomplete.

Enter week 6 hero, K Zac Turi.

The confident freshman came on to attempt North’s first field goal of the season.  Facing 4th and goal from the 8, the ball was snapped and placed down at the 15 yard line.  Turi stepped quickly to the ball and looked to slip slightly as he planted his left foot.

For a heartbeat the ball looked as though it would not have enough height to clear the line of scrimmage.

It did.

It wasn’t pretty, it wobbled through the air above outstretched arms, and it cleared the cross bar by mere inches, but it went through the portion of the goal posts that says, “Three Points” and North had its first lead over the Reitz Panthers since 2006.

DUVANTE THE DEFENDER

North has had remarkable stability at three of the four defensive line positions.  Since Wilbourn joined the starting group, he, Damon Byars, and Mike Johnson had make up ¾ of a very athletic defensive line.  The other end position had been occupied by no fewer than five different players.

Tonight, it fell to Du’vante Lane to fill the gap at defensive end.

By the time that this evening was done, it certainly appeared that the revolving door had closed for a while.

On Reitz’ ensuing drive, which was aided by a “questionable” 4th down measurement that was first called North ball then over-ruled following a rare huddle and a rarer re-measure by the officials, the North line made its own statement on who was in charge of the line of scrimmage.

Wilbourn dropped a runner for a one yard gain on first down.  On 2nd down, when Johnson flushed the quarterback with a ferocious rush from his side, the hapless quarterback tried to run past Lane.  In past games he might have had some luck with that move.  Tonight, Lane made an athletic leap and grabbed his jersey and Johnson trailed the play from behind and finished the quarterback off for a sack.

The secondary gave up a slant pass on 3rd and 10 that netted a first down for Reitz.

Following the “questionable re-measurement” on the following cycle, the Panthers looked like they might take the ball all the way to the North end zone.  With the ball at the 25, their quarterback dropped back to pass on 3rd and 5.

Byars and Wilbourn flushed the quarterback from the pocket again and for an instant it appeared that he might escape the rush.   Lane spotted the opportunity, twisted free from his would be blocker, and pounced on the quarterback from behind for a sack.

Facing 4th and 6, Reitz attempted a 43 yard field goal that came closer to landing in the visiting stands than it did crossing the goal post.

SECOND QUARTER

Following a botched handoff between Mooney and Lane on offense, Reitz had excellent field position to start the 2nd quarter.  They moved quickly to the North 19 and looked to be in position to score.  When DB Jay’von Gilmore knocked down a pass in the end zone, it set up 2nd and 10.  Wilbourn stopped a running play for no gain and then, on 3rd down, Lane got a hand on the quarterback that forced a fumble.  Reitz recovered the ball at the line of scrimmage, but their 4th down field goal attempt came only marginally closer to scoring than their first failed attempt.  At least this kick stayed in the field of play.

WILBOURN STRIKES AGAIN

Despite Mooney’s 20th run of the season longer than 10 yards (on 4th down and 1 at the Husky 29), North was forced to punt when their ensuing drive died out near midfield.  Reitz took over at their 28 and picked up 5 yards on 1st down.

On second down, their agile sophomore running back turned up field and made his way past the 40 yard marker.  Blake Howell slipped in and stripped him of the ball from behind and Wilbourn, trailing the play, alertly pounced on the ball to give North possession at the Reitz 44.

Mooney led the club downfield with a 10 yard run on yet another 4th down and then hit Lane with a 13 yard pick up to the Reitz 13 yard line.  When three plays gained nothing, the call went out for Zac Turi to again take the field.

2ND FIELD GOAL

Wanting to capitalize on the Reitz turnover and come away with something to show for the opportunity, North chose to attempt another field goal that was even longer than the first one.  Given that the first one had wobbled and bobbed its way to the end zone, Coach Wilson was taking a leap of faith comparable to his pair of 4th down gambits earlier in the quarter.

Turi repaid that faith.

Facing a 33 yard kick, the freshman made sure of his footing, struck the ball solidly, and a perfect kick sailed through the uprights with plenty of room to spare.

North led 6-0 with 2 minutes to play in the half and had its 1st Two-Field-Goal-Game by a kicker since Preston Meador performed the feat in 2008 against Central.

Reitz’ running back got loose for a long run just before half, but Johnson’s second quarterback sack of the game effectively ended the drive.

North went into halftime with a 6-0 lead against the Panthers.

SECOND HALF

The second half started ominously.  Johnson fumbled the kickoff but was quickly given an opportunity to atone for the miscue.  With Reitz facing 2nd and goal at the North 5 yard line, Johnson swept in from his end position, grabbed the quarterback from behind and threw him for a seven yard loss back to the 12 yard line.  The resulting Reitz field goal attempt proved no more affective than the first two and North still led 6-0.

Neither North nor Reitz were able to effectively move the ball on their next two possessions and the pressure shifted to the punt teams to perform.  With 4:29 remaining in the third quarter, North was still nursing a 6-0 lead when Reitz took over at their 19.

THE CRITICAL DRIVE—SHOULD HAVE STALLED TWICE

A run up the middle generated a first down for the Panthers at their 33.  When Lane sacked the quarterback for a four yard loss on 2nd down, it set up 3rd and 12.  The rough and rugged play of North’s defensive ends was proving to be the deciding factor in the game at that point.  For three quarters both teams had struggled to gain much momentum and it was Lane and Johnson’s pass rushes that kept the heat on Reitz’ offense.

North was winning the battle up to that moment.

And then it happened.

Reitz called a play-action pass on 3rd down.   A play-action involves a fake handoff to the running back that is designed to cause the linebackers and defensive backs to respond by holding position for just a moment to make certain that the runner has the ball.

A team doesn’t normally run play-action on 3rd and long because most defenders will assume that the run is not a threat and stay with their pass coverage.

Reitz ran it anyway.

And North’s defensive back hesitated.

It was all the Reitz receiver needed and he broke free behind the Husky defender and was open for a 32 yard pick up and a 1st down at North’s 37 yard line.

It still appeared that North would hold when Dickens stopped a runner for a one yard gain on 1st down and Lane stopped the Panthers for just a two yard gain on 2nd down.  When Pauley broke up a pass on 3rd down, it forced a 4th and 7 at the North 34.

Some how, some way, a Reitz receiver got open and hauled in a 20 yard pass reception to set up 1st and 10 at the 14.  Three plays later, the Panthers scored and took a 7-6 lead with just 12 seconds to play in the 3rd quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER

Howell made it exciting on his first carry of the possession for North when he broke open into the center of the defense.  With just one defender between him and the end zone, he made a juke-step-move that left the safety falling before him.  At the last moment, the defender grabbed Howell’s ankle and tripped the running back at the 46 yard line.

Neither team moved the ball after that and punts were repeatedly exchanged as the clock ran down.

There was but 2:30 left on the clock when Reitz’ final punt rolled dead at the North 4 yard line.  Facing 96 yards to go and no time outs remaining, Mooney and the Huskies faced an uphill battle.

They made the best of it.

Completing two passes to Pauley, Mooney had the Huskies at the 30 in under a minute of play.  He hit junior Heath Spindler with another short gainer but a bubble screen to Pauley lost a yard and the clock continued to run when he was tackled in bounds.

A quick pass to WR Brock Underwood gained 8 yards to midfield, but with scant seconds left to play, the prospects did not appear good for a North victory.  As the clock wound down to zero, Mooney threw a long pass down the left sideline in Underwood’s direction.

A yellow flag for interference gained North 15 yards and another shot at the end zone with no time on the clock.  Unfortunately the pass protection broke down under blitz pressure from Reitz and the pass fell harmlessly short of its intended target.

CONCLUSIONS

Notwithstanding the final score, North made a statement in this game.  With the addition of Lane to the front four on defense, the Huskies now have a line that can dictate terms to opponent quarterbacks.

Given that North already possessed a mobile, talented, and hard hitting linebacker corps led by Dickens, Colton Lord, and Drew Watters, the front seven for the Huskies are as good as anyone team that they have faced.  The defensive backs are opportunistic and can quickly turn a game around with a pick-off.

Where expectations following early season losses to Henderson and Mater Dei may have been dampened, this team looks to be rounding into playoff form at just the right moment.  Traveling to Paoli Friday night against a 5-1 team should be just the right litmus test to take the true measure of North’s 2011 success.

The Husky faithful have had reason to be optimistic that we could score from anywhere on the field while on offense.  We now have a defense that looks capable of closing the door on an opponent and giving North a chance to compete with anyone in the area.
