Game Recap

HUSKY MISTAKES COSTLY IN 24-0 LOSS TO MATER DEI

Going up against a highly ranked team is tough enough when you play your best.  Winning is nearly impossible if a team suffers mental lapses and miscues when facing a disciplined opponent.  The North Huskies played anything but their best football against Mater Dei in a 24-0 loss on Friday night at Central Stadium.

Tackles were missed at critical moments, handoffs were offered to running backs who weren’t there, receivers were left uncovered, a punt was downed while it still had life to bounce another 15 yards, inopportune penalties thwarted drives… it was not a night when execution was at its highest caliber to say the least.

Most importantly, it was a night when Mater Dei was granted extra chances during a game in which North could ill afford to offer them.

CONVERTING FOURTH-AND-SEVENTEEN?

A Wildcat holding penalty threatened to stall their opening drive at North’s 36 yard line.  Faced with 3rd and 17, the Husky rush flushed the Mater Dei quarterback from the pocket and forced him to throw too long and over the head of his receiver.    When the Wildcats lined up to “go for it” on 4th and 17, few in the stadium believed that they had a chance to gain a first down.

No one “makes it” on fourth-and-seventeen.

The Mater Dei quarterback dumped a quick pass into the left flat for what it appeared would be a short gain—well short of the first down.  A North defender grabbed the receiver but didn’t follow through with his tackle.  There was no ferocity to the hit and the Husky didn’t choose to wrap up the ball carrier.

Left standing, the slow developing “Hook And Ladder” play that the Wildcats had devised in the huddle had time to work.  Another Mater Dei offensive player approached the receiver from behind and, because the defender had not followed through with his initial contact, the receiver had the opportunity to lateral the ball to the late-arriving “Ladder”.

Twenty yards later, the second runner was forced out of bounds but not before gaining a first down.

North trailed 7-0 two plays later.

NEXT POSSESSION OMINOUS

On North’s subsequent possession, which started at their 20 yard line, the first play witnessed the first of many times that a running back failed to “show up” for a handoff.

Taking the snap, QB Max Mooney stepped to his left and presented the ball for a “dive” back at the line of scrimmage.  No back was there to take it—the runner had gone in the opposite direction.  Mooney then tried to “flip” the ball back to RB Blake Howell.  The toss was behind the runner and North was lucky to recover the loose ball at the 14 yard line.

Howell gained the lost yardage back on the next play—but not without a Herculean effort.  Taking a handoff to the right, he found there was no hole, retreated, reversed his field with a host of Wildcats in pursuit, and managed to gain six yards on a play in which he must have run 20 yards or more.

The following play saw matters get worse.  Mooney rolled to his left to pass and for a moment it appeared as though Mater Dei was posing for a team picture before him.  A seven yard ‘sack’ left North with 4th and 19 at its eleven yard line.

The Huskies elected to punt.

The kick shanked off the punters foot, angled to the left, and went out of bounds short of the first down marker.

THE DEFENSE MAKES A STAND

Just when it appeared that the game may get out of hand early, the defense answered “The Call”.  North diagnosed a “Bubble Screen” to the right on first down and Blake Howell stopped the receiver for a three yard loss.

DT Jeff Burch sniffed out a “Middle Screen” on second down and dropped the Wildcat runner for another three yard loss.  On third and fourth downs, the defensive backfield got good matchups and held Mater Dei without a completion.

North had weathered its first crisis of the evening.  Would that the remainder of the game had turned out as well.

SECOND QUARTER

The Huskies drove the ball deep into Mater Dei territory early in the second quarter.  Facing 3rd and 4 at the Wildcat 30, it appeared North had an open receiver at the 10 yard line when Mooney rolled out to his left.  Unpressured, he through the ball straight down the sideline but the receiver ran the rout as though it were a post and cut towards the center of the field.   The pass fell incomplete and it was apparent that there had been some miscommunication.

A certain “First-And-Goal" became fourth-and-fourDuvante Lane’s run came up a yard short of a first down.

THE DEFENSE HOLDS THE LINE AGAIN

When Mater Dei’s big, All-City running back ran off left tackle on the Wildcats’ first play, not one, not two, not three, but four players all got an “Arm” on him before he’d gone five yards.  None of the four managed to gain any leverage and despite the fact he’d been hit four times, he ran 32 yards before LB Drew Watters met him head on at the North 40 yard line with what was truly a touchdown saving tackle.

DB Jay’von Gilmore fell victim to the worst call of the evening by the officials two plays later.

When the big running back came around end, Gilmore was the “last line of defense” and made contact with the runner while he was still five yards from the sideline.  The senior safety drove into the runner with all his might and his momentum carried both players out of bounds.  The officials called an Unnecessary Roughness penalty against Gilmore and the ball was spotted at the North 14 yard line.

Gilmore’s initial contact had been made with a routine football move well in advance of going out of bounds and his efforts to push the running back out of bounds were simply a completion of that move.  It was a questionable penalty at best and not worthy of 15 yards.

The defense held, however, when DE Antwan Ogburn got his arms up high on third down and forced the Wildcat quarterback to over throw his receiver on 3rd down.  Mater Dei had to settle for a Field Goal and led 10-0.

AN UNTIMELY DOWNING

North and Mater Dei exchanged punts on their next two possessions and it looked as though the game was settling into a battle of field position.  When North went “three-and-out” a second time, they were forced to punt from their 24 yard line.

The punting in the first half was poor by North’s standards.  The first four punts had barely averaged 26 yards.  When the ensuing punt on fourth down was low like a line-drive in baseball, the collective groan from the stands was easily heard.

North appeared to catch a break, however, when the ball landed on its point at the North 40 yard line and bounced and began to take off on what would be a 15-20 yard “roll”.

It didn't work out that way because at that moment, the North “gunner” swung in from his outside coverage position, made a dash for the ball, and inexplicably “downed” it while it still had a full head of steam.

Central had the ball at the North 46 rather than what would have certainly been ten to fifteen yards deep in their own territory.  Four plays later, they ran into the North end zone and made the score 17-0 just before half time.

SECOND HALF

North caught a break on Mater Dei’s first drive when LB Duvante Lane recovered a fumble at North’s 26.  The Huskies pushed the ball back out to midfield before the drive stalled and a 28 yard punt (North’s second longest punt of the evening) followed by a short return gave Mater Dei the ball at their 29.

When “BigMike Johnson dropped a Wildcat runner for a ten yard loss on a reverse play to make it 3rd and 15 at the 24, it appeared that the Huskies might finally have a change to “Get Back In” the game.

The North defense flushed the agile Mater Dei quarterback out of the pocket and he scrambled to his right with Huskies in hot pursuit.  As he neared the sideline in front of his bench, he planted himself and threw deep downfield.  The play had taken long enough to develop that a Wildcat receiver had gotten some separation on his defender .

The receiver hauled the ball in and Mater Dei had a 43 yard gain and a first down at the North 33.  A few plays later, in the face of an all-out blitz by the Huskies on 4th-and-nine, the Wildcat quarterback stood tall and whipped the ball over the middle to an open receiver who waltzed into the end zone untouched.

North trailed 24-0.

FOURTH QUARTER

The Huskies caught yet another break on their longest drive of the game.  Facing 3rd and 14 at North’s 33, Mooney found Watters over the middle for an 11 yard gain—a pickup that would have been well short of the first down.  Mater Dei’s overzealous defenders tossed Mooney to the ground after his throw and a 15 yard “Roughing The Passer” penalty netted a drive-extending 1st down at the Mater Dei 41.

Switching to “The Wildcat” offense, two Ty Pauley runs and a reverse by WR Logan Van Leer netted another first down.  After that, Mooney re-entered the game and finally hooked up with WR Brock Underwood on a long pass that set up 1st and goal at the 5.

Howell carried the ball to the four, Johnson took it down to the 1, and Mooney was stopped for no gain on a quarterback sneak behind G Damon Byars.  That set up 4th down and goal at the 1 yard line.

The North faithful were on their feet and cheering for the Huskies to get on the board.

A botched snap ended the cheering prematurely.

ONE LAST MISCUE

The defense looked like it would again rise to the occasion and held the Wildcats for no gain on their first two running plays from their one yard line.  Facing 3rd and 10, it appeared that North would get the ball back in prime territory to mount another scoring threat.

Mater Dei ran “Play Action” on third down.  In simpler terms, they faked a handoff to a running back before the quarterback attempted a pass.  The idea of “Play Action” is to cause the defensive backs to “bite” on the fake handoff and allow the wide receiver to gain some separation between himself and the defensive back.  The quarterback can then throw the ball to an open receiver.

The North defender “bit” on the play action fake.

The Wildcat receiver didn’t get tackled until he’d gone 44 yards and Mater Dei had the ball at midfield.

In tennis, when the winning player has achieved all he needs to be declared the winner, the announcer declares, “Game, Set, and Match!”.

With a 1st and 10 at midfield with under 7 minutes to play, all that was left was for the public address announcer to make the declaration.

TAKE AWAYS

Even though there was an imbalance in the score, the Huskies did not play as badly as the score would indicate.  Mater Dei is arguably one of the top 2 teams in the state in their Division.  They have an experienced quarterback and one of the top running backs in the area.  Their line was as big as North’s and they went deep into the playoffs last season.

From a yardage stand point, the Huskies held the Wildcats to their fewest yards gained rushing on the season.  Without the final 44 yard pass on 3rd and 10, their quarterback would have had his poorest game of the season.

North went a combined 4 of 14 on 3rd or 4th down attempts.  The Huskies played inconsistently on offense and were plagued by mental lapses.  They gave away too many downs wherein runners didn’t show up to take the ball out of the quarterback’s outstretched arms.  Defenders seemed try and arm-tackle opponents at the worst of times.  Our opponents again routinely faced short fields after poor special teams execution.

Things get no easier in Newburgh this coming Friday.  Castle is undefeated and has been embarrassing foes with astonishing ease in 2011.  It will take North’s ‘CONSISTENT’ best effort to win the contest and a level of focus that results in “Our Best Game Of The Season
