HUSKIES OVERPOWER WARRIORS 33-14
The Huskies took care of business in workman style Saturday night at Central Stadium. North displayed its offensive firepower in the first quarter and then the defense forced three turnovers in the second quarter. All told, the outcome was never in doubt in North’s 33-14 win over Harrison.
Truth be told, no opponent that used to soar so high has been laid so low as the Warriors. This was a game that North was supposed to win handily and they did so. But that doesn’t take any glory away from the Huskies’ home opener.
NICE TOUCHES
Being the first home game of the season, North’s new public announcer made his debut, the new game program was put out by the Booster Club, and the band gave an early view of its 2011 routine. The new announcer was entertaining and accurate, the program was outstanding, and the band’s participation in the event was welcome and exciting. All of them added a nice touch to “Opening Night”.
TWO DRIVES EQUALS 14 POINTS
Up against a defense that had nearly as many holes to fill as a New Orleans levy, the Huskies made it to the end zone on each of their first two possessions. Nothing came in big chunks—it was simply well executed, dominating football against a lesser opponent.
After the opening kickoff went out-of-bounds to give North the ball at their 35, the Huskies went on an 11 play, 5 minute drive to pay dirt. The only questionable moment in the drive occurred when, faced with 3rd and 9 at midfield, a screen pass to WR Ty Pauley came up a yard short of the first down marker.
North chose to “go for it” on fourth-and-one and “Big” Mike Johnson rambled off left tackle for a 13 yard gain and a first down at the Harrison 29. Two plays later, TE Drew Watters caught his first of four passes on the night for 18 yards and North had a 1st and goal at the six. QB Max Mooney, after a week of doubts regarding the ability of his injured index finger to stand up to the beating of live football, ran the ball in for a touchdown on a Veer Option right and North led 7-0 five minutes into the game.
“BIG” MIKE PLANTS A QUARTERBACK
Initially, Harrison looked like they might be improved from season’s past. On their first possession, they extended the drive with a pass to the left hand side that garnered a first down at the 38. They proved they were the ‘same old’ Warriors, however, when their nimble quarterback took the snap and rolled to his right. Without a thought for his ‘blind’ side, the Warrior QB roamed toward his sideline looking downfield for a receiver .
His lack of wariness caught up with him in the form of “Big” Mike Johnson. Grabbing the hapless quarterback from behind, Johnson familiarized him with the taste of the black rubber that lays beneath the artificial turf at Central Stadium. The drive stalled shortly thereafter.
BLOCKED PUNT
Facing 4th and 14 deep in their own territory, Harrison lined up to punt. Senior Colton Lord angled in from the outside and got a hand in front of the kick. The ball caromed out of bounds at the Harrison 26 and North had prime field position to go up by two scores.
When Mooney lost five yards on a running play on 3rd and 3, the Huskies looked like they might come away with no points to show for Lord’s fine effort. Facing 4th and 8, Mooney ran a bootleg pass play to his right and spied Watters open near the ten yard line. The sure handed tight end went up high for the ball and hauled it in for a first down at the eleven.
The first possession had shown that Harrison was outclassed on the perimeter by North’s speed and Coach Wilson brought in senior Roland Eldridge on 3rd and 5 from the six yard line. Eldridge, who averages eight yards per carry on his nine rushes this season, flashed his fast feet on a sweep around left end and easily outdistanced the Warrior defense on a race to the flag. After kicker Zac Turi booted the extra point, North led 14-0 with 2 minutes to play in the first quarter.
A GAME OF GIVE AND TAKE
The second quarter of the game was unlike any other quarter of football the Huskies have seen this season. At one point, near the six minutes remaining mark in the half, the ball changed hands four times in the span of seven plays.
For its part, the Warriors gave away the game during the middle of the quarter. They were moving the ball for the first time in the game and had penetrated North territory to the 32 yard line.
Their quarterback threw a ball slightly behind his receiver at the 19 yard line and rather than trailing and deflecting the ball away, senior Jay’von Gilmore accelerated, stopped pursuing the receiver and instead stepped toward the ball, and neatly intercepted at the Huskies’ 19. He returned the ball to the 33
MOONEY’S 1ST “PICK” OF THE SEASON
After running back Blake Howell made two carries that brought the ball out to midfield, it was North’s turn to turn the ball back over. A poorly thrown ball by Mooney resulted in his first interception of the season. To add insult to injury, the Warrior who snared the ball took off toward the sideline and made his way neatly past the North bench before being knocked out of bounds at the 26.
Harrison could not stand its own good fortune and on the very next play fumbled the ball back to North after a screen play picked up a few yards. Senior Jeff Burch delivered a vicious hit that stripped the ball from the Warrior receiver and Eldridge pounced on it at the North 23.
HOWELL PUTS THE GAME ‘OUT OF REACH’
Running behind the left side of the line as he did most of the evening, Mike Johnson sailed off tackle for a 15 yard gain on first down. The Huskies were out from underneath the shade of their goal posts and with 4:30 remaining in the half, they were poised to take a commanding three touchdown lead with a long drive.
It was sound logic. It just didn’t take as long as anyone thought it would.
On the next play, Mooney handed the ball to Howell on a dive play into the center of the line. Throughout the half, North’s offensive line had no trouble opening creases for Husky runners. On the night, four different runners would score touchdowns and the team would average over nine yards per carry on structured running plays.
The line broke down on this play.
Howell appeared stopped at the line of scrimmage for no gain.
And then he twisted free.
Spinning, he broke one would-be tackler’s grasp upon him, put a shoulder to a second one, and burst free into the Harrison secondary. From there he “turned on the afterburners” and out-sprinted the Warriors to the goal line. It was a 62 yard touchdown run that was a thing of beauty and essentially broke Harrison’s back. North led 21-0.
SECOND HALF
If Howell’s run gave North its winning margin, it was defensive tackle Damon Byars’ big stop at midfield that effectively ended the contest early in the third quarter.
Coming out in “The Wildcat” offense to start the second stanza, Harrison showed some success with the option laden offense. They reached midfield in just five plays and looked as though they may have been able to make a game of it.
And then Damon Byars taught them the meaning of the word “respect”.
On a critical third down, Byars blew through the center of the Harrison offensive line and collided head on with the running back just as he took the hand off. The unlucky Warrior was lucky to hold onto all of his limbs let alone the football.
Suddenly Harrison was facing 4th and 12 just when they had thought they might gain a first down in North territory. A punt followed and North had the ball for the first time in the half.
DUVANTE TAKES OFF
North has traditionally run counters and trap plays into the center of the line with great success on offense. Where some teams choose to put their most talented and experienced linemen at the tackle positions where they can counter the opponents defensive ends, Coach Wilson typically puts those players at guard.
Long time watchers of the Huskies recognize the skill those linemen bring to the interior of the line and their role in opening spaces into (and through) the heart of an opponent’s defense.
Byars, Dylan Simmons, and Sam Jones make up the heart of the North offensive line. When North took over at the 25 following Harrison’s punt, those three men heaved to and blew open a hole with a trap block on the Warrior defensive tackle.
Fullback Duvante Lane made the most of the opportunity.
Busting “up the gut” of the Harrison defense, Lane looked for open space to his right and angled toward the North sideline as he neared the forty yard line. Picking up a blocker in tight end Drew Watters, Lane rambled all the way to the Harrison 32 before being brought down.
Johnson and Howell banged away at the defense and North soon had a first down at the 18 and looked to be running “down hill”. With a first down at the 18, Mooney lined up behind center and surveyed the defense.
He must have seen something he recognized as a weakness in the center of the defensive formation, because the quarterback took a moment and stepped back to talk to Lane—who was already down in his stance. Mooney gave some insight or instruction and moved back under center. Taking the snap, he quickly handed the ball to Lane on a dive between Simmons and Byars and the fullback drove all the way to the five yard line before being tackled.
Two plays later “Big” Mike went off-tackle for a touchdown and, at 27-0, the game was essentially decided at that point.
FINAL TOUCHDOWN GOES TO LANE
After having blocked for others and made long runs that didn’t make the end zone, it fell to Lane to get North’s last score of the evening. As time ran out in the third quarter, North had advanced to the Harrison 11 yard line on yet another long drive.
Mooney lined up directly behind the center and did a reverse play-action handoff on a bootleg roll out that fooled no one on the defensive front line. Racing to his left, the unprotected quarterback was easy game for the Warrior defensive end on that side. The defender came straight for Mooney and grabbed him at the hip and knee.
The junior quarterback showed his mettle and displayed “grace under fire” as he struggled to remain upright just long enough to find a receiver. Mooney spotted Lane at the three yard line and flicked the ball to the fullback just as he began to go down under the pressure from the defensive end.
Lane caught the ball in his bread basket and it appeared that two Harrison defenders might deny him the end zone.
They underestimated North’s fullback.
Lane bowled both defenders over by pressing backward past them into the end zone. Without turning to give them a chance to strip him of the ball, he pushed with his legs, and leapt backwards across the goal line carrying both defenders with him as he fell. North had its final score and won 33-14.
LESSONS LEARNED
North won its second game of the season and did so in impressive fashion. What was not lost upon a seasoned fan was the long drives that Harrison was able to sustain during the second and fourth quarters. The Warriors are far from being a good team. That they were able to pass for over one hundred yards and run for nearly two hundred should not be lost upon the North faithful.
While North’s defense played opportune football and displayed moments of impressive skills, Harrison was able to pass too easily. When running, they were able to get outside the ends almost at will—it fell to the linebacker corps to contain. That’s a job that traditionally is accomplished by the defensive line.
Better teams will exploit that weakness and next week North comes up against one of the best teams in the Tri-State in Mater Dei. They might be a 2A school, but there is no doubt that they recognized the soft parts of North’s play this week.
Those soft parts have to get much harder if North is to win. And they have to get harder fast.
