HUSKIES OUTPLAY TIGERS IN 23-20 LOSS
The Huskies might’ve been the best team on the field Friday night at Central Stadium in their 23-20 loss to Memorial. Unfortunately, an odd stretch of penalties kept that fact from being verified on the scoreboard.
1ST QUARTER
The early portion of the game resembled a track meet. On their first possession, Memorial alternated running and passing plays to get to midfield. The drive, however, appeared to stall when LB Tyler May correctly read a quarterback draw play and stopped the Tiger QB for no gain.
Rather than punt, however, Memorial lined up in shotgun formation and began to bark out signals. Using a change of volume in his voice just as he turned to check his sideline for late instructions, the quarterback managed to draw the entire Husky front seven offsides.
The resulting penalty gave Memorial a first down at the North 42 yard line. It was a penalty that would haunt the Huskies over and over and over throughout the game. Seven times during the course of the evening, North’s defense would be penalized for jumping offsides.
In this particular case, the penalty led directly to a touchdown since on the very next play, the Tigers turned a screen pass into a 42 yard score. At 8:41 to go in the first quarter, North trailed 7-0.
The Huskies aren’t without their own tools, however, and the Green and White were quick to even the score.
Despite a holding penalty that caused the offense to start in the shadow of its goal post, three running plays moved the line of scrimmage to the 27. On first down and with the Tigers reading ‘run’, QB Luke Blankenship faked a handoff to the running back and the defense “bit” on the fake. With the defensive backs stopped in their tracks and reacting to the fake, WR Caleb Kinnaird streaked past the defender assigned to him. Blankenship let fly a perfect spiral that hit Kinnaird square in the hands 43 yards downfield. Only a stumble prevented the lanky wide receiver from scoring and he rolled out of bounds at the Memorial 28.
Another play-action fake freed up FB Duvante Lane for an 11 yard reception from Blankenship as he rolled to his left and threw back to his right. Because of the two successful passing plays, the Tiger defense backed off the line of scrimmage on first and ten at the 17 and North made them pay.
Handing the ball to RB Richard Compton, the running back banged his way between G Damon Byars and T Austin Moll, quickly side stepped a linebacker, and broke free into open space to his right. He angled toward the flag at the corner of the end zone and sprinted to get there before two defenders could run up to meet him. In less than three minutes of play and following K David Patton’s extra-point kick, North had evened the score at 7-7.
North bottled up the Memorial running game on their next possession and the Tigers turned to the passing game. Utilizing the screen pass to offset Husky blitzes, Memorial moved downfield on 11 plays and went back ahead by a score of 14-7 as the first quarter ended.
2ND QUARTER
The Husky rushing attack has had many weapons this season. Alternately, several players have stepped into the spotlight and put on a show. On North’s next drive, it was sophomore Blake Howell’s turn to shine.
With Compton and Lane alternating carries as C Sam Jones, G Damien Jackson, and T Jarrod Hawkins battered the undersized Memorial defensive line, the Huskies generated a first down at the 38.
After hammering away at the left side, the call came in from the sidelines for a sweep to the right hand side of the Memorial line. Howell took a pitch from Blankenship, quickly got outside the end, and galloped deep into the Tiger secondary. Faking out one defender, he cut back inside, weaved through some traffic, and wasn’t pulled down until he’d gone 51 yards to the Memorial eleven yard line.
Two plays later, following a great block from TE Drew Watters, Compton swept around left for a game tying nine yard touchdown. In less than twelve minutes of game time, the two teams had combined for four touchdowns.
The Tigers took Patton’s short kick off and returned it to their 39. An 11 yard run and their fourth successful screen pass of the half brought the ball to the North 29 in a matter of seconds. The Husky defense then appeared to make a stand.
LB Kyle Holland shot through the center of the Tiger line and sacked the opposing quarterback for a four yard loss on 1st down. DT Damien Jackson abused Memorial’s guard on the next snap, sweeping him to the ground and then diving to grab hold of the quarterback. Jackson slammed him to the ground as well and it set up 3rd an un-makeable 21 at the North 35.
And then… the Husky defense jumped offsides for the third time.
On the next play, Memorial ran their fifth successful screen pass of the half to pick up the first down.
Facing first and goal, DB Richard Compton and LB Tyler May combined to throw the Tiger runner for a 3 yard loss. On second and goal, DB Colton Lord made a great play in the left hand corner of the end zone to bat away what could have easily been another touchdown. On third and goal, DB DeWayne Williams finally stopped the screen play for a one yard gain and Memorial had to settle for a field goal that made the score 17-14.
The track meet continued when North quickly shot back up the field on its next possession. With the clock running down on the first half, QB Luke Blankenship ran twice to pick up nearly 20 yards. Following a swing pass to Compton, North was well out past midfield and into Memorial territory when disaster struck.
On 2nd and 7 with just over a minute remaining to play, Blankenship dropped back to pass and came under heavy rush from his right. He eluded one tackler and broke the grasp of another. Dashing toward the opponent sideline in search of a safety valve, none was forthcoming. Running out of room, the North quarterback planted his foot as defenders closed in and threw the ball downfield into a crowd of jerseys.
A blue-and-white jersey came away with the football and took off in the direction of North territory. He made it all the way to the Husky 5 yard line before he could be forced out of bounds by a fast closing Blake Howell.
Two plays later, the bubble screen paid off for the sixth time in the game and the Huskies trailed 23-14 at half time.
SECOND HALF
North’s coaches made several adjustments during the break and the troublesome screen pass would not be a problem for the remainder of the game. The Tigers would never again use the play to gain more than a yard or two, but the damage was already done.
North’s defense held Memorial to three short possessions in the third quarter and the Huskies dominated the game from a statistical perspective.
Sticking with the ground game, the Huskies strung together a fourteen play drive that ate up most of the final eight minutes of the quarter. The Big Green offensive line lead the way as Compton, Lane, Howell, and Mike Johnson carried the ball on 13 of the 14 plays.
Eight of those running plays went behind G Damien Jackson and Memorial had no answer for the big senior guard. With Howell carrying the ball on the final five plays, Jackson and Company battered holes in classic “smash mouth” football style and North scored to bridge the gap to 23-20. The extra point kick was blocked and, although no one knew it at the time, the final score had been reached.
FOURTH QUARTER
Following the ensuing kickoff, Memorial was twice more aided by penalties on their drive. On third and 17 at their 26, it appeared that the Huskies had held when a Tiger pass was limited to just 11 yards. Unfortunately, a North blitzer was called for roughing the passer and a 15 yard penalty was tacked on to the end of the play.
Despite being in North territory, the defense again forced a third down and “long”. The sixth defensive offside penalty on the Huskies quickly made it third and “short”. DeWayne Williams forced Memorial’s big wide receiver out of bounds short of the first down marker and it set up fourth down and one at North’s 41.
The Tigers decided to go for it.
DE Austin Moll answered the call and put a ferocious rush on Memorial’s QB and forced a hurried throw to avoid a sack that resulted in an incomplete pass.
THE FINAL DRIVE
North took over in great field position with 10:30 on the clock and a chance to take control of the game.
Having already found the formula for victory in the previous drive, the Huskies again pounded out yards on the ground. Howell, Johnson, and Compton alternated carries on six straight plays and drove the ball down to the Memorial 19 yard line. The key play in the early part of the series was a 24 yard run by Compton around right end where Jarrod Hawkins and Drew Watters gave him room to run and Compton scurried down the opponents sideline for the big gain.
On 3rd and four from the 18, Compton went straight into the line on a dive play that looked to pick up the first down. The spot of the ball certainly looked close enough to merit a measurement, but none was forthcoming. The officials “eye balled” the situation and declared four down.
On 4th and inches from the 15, it was Compton again who drove into the line, this time behind Jackson.
And for the first time in the game, the Tigers held.
The sticks were brought out, the measurement was made, and the ball was awarded to the Tigers.
Still unable to run the ball against the North defense, Memorial used short possession type passes to nibble for bits of yardage and eat up the clock. Staying in bounds and stringing together just enough yards to move the chains, the Tigers strung together three first downs and wound the clock down until stalling at the North 22.
With the ball and 2:49 remaining, the outcome was still in doubt when North took over.
A fumble on a pass completion that would have picked up a first down at the 40 yard line with 2 minutes to play effectively ended North’s hopes.
CONCLUSION
The Tigers were out gained, had substantially less time of possession, and could not run the ball. With the exception of the “screen” play, they seldom executed any play with precision. Twice they had scoring drives that would have otherwise stalled had North not committed offside penalties to either generate a first down or shorten the yardage to a make-able distance.
The Huskies are better than their record. The last two games have shown that this is a team that does not quit.
Travelling to The Bowl is never an easy task and next Friday night’s journey will be as tough as any.
But if the other guys judge North by its record rather than its talent, they could be in for a surprise.
