Game Recap

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. — It didn't happen on any single play. But something caused momentum to change at halftime during Jeffersonville's 28-14 Class 5A sectional championship victory over North on Friday night.

Despite losing standout running back/linebacker Larry Merriweather eight minutes into the game with a severely sprained left ankle, North played the favored Red Devils off their feet through the first 24 minutes.

The Huskies capitalized on two Jeffersonville turnovers, turned them into touchdowns, shut down the Red Devils' interior running game and led 14-7 at halftime.

After the break, Jeffersonville changed blocking schemes, North's defenders began to bend, the Huskies' running game failed to generate first downs and the team eventually ran out of steam.

"We have a lot of guys that played both ways," said North coach Mike Wilson, whose team finished 9-3. "Losing Merriweather really hurt us. He gets off on a 45-yard run and gets hurt the next play.

"He's not only one of best defenders at outside linebacker, but he took pressure off (Dion) Pendleton in our running game. They're like our 1-2 punch. And when you lose half of it in a game against a great team, it going to show."

Travis Carlile, Meriweather's backup at tailback, was injured last week. The Huskies called on sophomore Cameron Clements who crashed in from a yard out to give North a 7-0 lead with 11:15 left in the second quarter. The score was set up when Jeffersonville muffed a North punt. Pendleton picked up at the Jeff 31 and zipped to the 4 before being ridden down.

Jeffersonville answered with Edward Wright-Baker's 1-yard TD flip to split-end Adam Parella. It capped an 11-play drive that consumed five minutes. Key play came on 4th-and-2 from the North 31. Wright-Baker connected with Tony Moore for nine yards.

"There were three or four situations like that," said Wilson. "We make that play on fourth down and they don't score. And we missed a couple open chances ourselves. It was like a tale of two halves."

North's second score came after Wright-Baker, untouched, dropped the ball when looking for a receiver.

North's Randall Tomlin recovered at the Jeff 41 with 2:40 left in the first half. The Huskies needed seven plays with Pendleton carrying the final 2 yards with 14 seconds left making it 14-7.

Starting the second half on its own 21, Jeff marched 79 yards in 13 plays, converting on a fourth-and-4 situation and benefiting from a pass interference call at the goal line. With 7:58 left in the third period, the Red Devil's Jamie Goldsmith hammered the middle for a 6-yard TD though the PAT was wide.

Two minutes later, North's 14-13 lead evaporated with Wright-Baker hit Parella with his second score from 23 yards out. They teamed again for the 2-point conversion and a 21-14 Jeff lead.

The Red Devils (10-2) sealed their first sectional win since 1998 when Wright-Baker, working from the shotgun the entire game, ran in from the 3.

Wright-Baker, an agile left-hander,completed 12 of 17 for 164 and ran for 78 more. Goldsmith added 92 yards on 15 carries.

Pendleton finished with 32 yards rushing on 16 attempts and was 9 of 117 for 108 yards. Meriweather had 53 yards on four attempts before being sidelined.
