Sometimes all it takes to start a fire is a spark. When Harrison successfully pulled off back-to-back fake punts on fourth down versus the Huskies Friday night, it appeared that North was in trouble. 90% of the plays run in the first quarter of the game were run inside the North 35 yard line.
And then Ryan Parkman lit a spark.
When Harrison's QB rolled out to his right under pressure, he fired a ball into the right hand corner of the end zone that Parkman leapt high and swiped from the Warrior wide receiver. The play held Harrison scoreless despite multiple opportunities in the early going and gave North a lift.
Harrison's next serious drive was thwarted by CB Damien Odom's interception and 20 yard return. Following that play, QB Dion Pendleton spotted Parkman running a post pattern from the left. Parkman grabbed the throw and made an incredible stop and 'turn-on-a-dime' on the 15 yard line that allowed him to dash into the end zone untouched.
Later in the quarter, Pendleton hit WR Brandon Stewart with a long strike to the Harrison one yard line. The leaping reception by Stewart gave him the All Time North Reception Record and the Huskies a first and goal situation. When Larry Merriweather ran the final yard, it gave North a two TD lead and Harrison never seriously challenged again.
SECOND HALF
To open the second half, North got great field position following a long return by Stewart and Pendleton put it to his full advantage. Faking a dive into the line, he then stepped inside the defensive end and took off on a 56 yard touchdown run. With North having missed an earlier extra point kick, the Huskies went for two and Pendleton nailed Stewart for the two point conversion to put North ahead 21-0.
Harrison's speed had been apparent from the start of the game and had at times given North fits throughout the first half. The staff apparently made adjustments at half time because the defense put on a display of physical and tactical superiority after the break. After DT Matt Hawkins and DE Jordan Lewis combined on a brutal third quarter sack, Harrison's QB became tentative and often overthrew open receivers. S Stephan Jackson stepped in front of one throw and brought it back 15 yards before being downed.
With Harrison unable to sustain a drive, North was off to the races again when QB Pendleton zoomed around right end and broke free for a 33 yard touchdown. Later, when big OG J.T.Turner blew open a huge hole in the right side of the Warrior defense, RB Larry Merriweather raced into the Warrior secondary for a 40 yard gain that ended with him stepping out of bounds on the ten. Two plays later, Merriweather gave the Huskies a five touchdown lead.
By the fourth quarter, both teams were giving their second strings an opportunity to get varsity playing time. RB Cory Hunter capped a long drive with seven yard run when FB Travis Carlisle sprung him outside with a block and then Hunter outran two Harrison defenders to the flag.
Heading into Saturday's match up with Mater Dei, North remains undefeated in conference play. A shoulder injury to LB Marlon Shamell appears to be the only serious injury concern as the Huskies advance toward game six.
