Given a chance to atone for last year’s mistakes, the Huskies came out with one thing on their minds last Friday night against Memorial: revenge. When the final gun sounded and the scoreboard read 33-7, their minds were clear and revenge had been served.
With an offense geared to grinding out yardage behind its powerful line, North hammered out 322 yards rushing against the Tigers and moved to 3 – 0 in the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference and 2 – 0 in the city. From the second possession forward, the Huskies opened holes in the Memorial line that were big enough to drive trucks through. Given the talent of running backs Larry Merriweather and Damien Odom along with quarterback Dion Pendleton’s fleet feet, the trucks weren’t necessary.
When Merriweather was pitched the ball with an opportunity to accelerate around end, he was off like a rocket. When Odom gained access into the center of Memorial’s linebacker corps, he bulled past them. When Pendleton forced an option decision on the Tiger’s hapless defensive ends, he made them pay.
To be certain, watching the mastery of OT Jordan Lewis, OG J.T. Turner, C Scott Price, OG Matt Hawkins, and OT Corey Allgood was a pleasure from the opening minutes until they were rested early in the fourth quarter.
What goes without saying is that this North ball club is just as talented and even more dominant on the other side of the ball.
Time and again safety Brandon Stewart met a Memorial runner on a potential break away run and he closed the gap—and he closed it with authority. Sure handed, open field tackles occurred so frequently that he and defensive backfield mate Stephan Jackson made them look routine. At cornerback, Damien Odom intercepted one pass and knocked away others.
The linebacker corps of Clinton Brown, Marlon Shamell, and George Quarles repeatedly dropped running backs as they emerged past the line of scrimmage. Brown’s hard hits were audible across the field throughout the evening and with few exceptions all runs into the center of the defense were stopped before they had a chance to do any real damage.
With the Tigers playing a tall, lanky, freshman quarterback with a fair amount of mobility, it was impressive to watch DT J.T. Turner and DE Jordan Lewis bat down passes and intimidate the young QB. Before the contest was very old, the Tigers’ vertical game had been taken away from them by the hard rush provided by the defensive line and they had to revert to quick screens and short drops in the shotgun formation in order to have any chance at success.
Grinding out long drives, the first half consisted mostly of QB Pendleton either handing a dive to Odom for a five or six yard gain or pitching to Merriweather for a first down. The Huskies led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter and were knocking on Memorial’s door at the 8 yard line when the second quarter began.
Merriweather’s second TD made it 14-0 and the junior running back was wreaking havoc on their defense before Memorial ever retaliated. With Larry running for nearly 100 yards in the first half alone, the Huskies were waking up ghosts from years gone by—names like O’Donnell, Bushrod, and Garrett came to mind as North dominated play. The game was not as close as the score at half as the defense was shutting out the Tigers in all aspects of their game. To say that North looked like a city powerhouse was not a stretch.
With halftime featuring the procession of the Homecoming Queen and King as well as a complete Green Brigade Marching Band performance, a glorious bright orange full moon hovered over the east side of the stadium as the Huskies retook the field.
And the show just got better from there.
SECOND HALF
QB Dion Pendleton carried an option play down the right hand side of the line to start the second half. Faking a handoff to the dive man, he forced the Memorial defensive end to commit himself and then cut inside. Working his way past the pursuing linebackers, the elusive quarterback then cut back across the field and accelerated down the left hand sideline. Pendleton was pulling away from Memorial’s defensive backs when he carried the ball into the end zone for a 65 yard touchdown run.
When North’s receivers displayed some rare problems holding onto key passes, things settled down for a short lull near the middle of the third quarter. When the defense held on downs and forced Memorial to punt for the fifth time with 6 minutes to play in the quarter, usually sure handed returner Brandon Stewart muffed the catch and Memorial had a spark of life. They quickly converted the turnover into seven points when their young QB found an open receiver at the goal line.
On the ensuing kickoff, though, Stewart reminded the crowd of why he is the most feared return man in Evansville. Catching a block in the center of the wedge from Scott Price, Stewart shook two tacklers, turned toward his left at midfield, and sprinted 85 yards for an answering score. Despite missing the extra point, the Huskies led 27-7 at that point and were never seriously threatened again.
Merrieweather closed out the scoring with his third touchdown and both he and Pendleton ended the night with over 100 yards rushing. North ended up completing four of nine passes for 47 yards on the evening.
In the end, the Huskies were too big, too fast, and too experienced for the Tigers and this season’s match amounted to ‘pay back’ time for past defeats. It appears that multiple opponents may leave the 2006 season after having received a similar message from the North Huskies.
