Highlights included: The Huskies of '64 possessed both thunder and lightning. Thunder was provided in the running ability of FB Ken Bargo. Coming off a sophomore season in which he had earned All-City status, Bargo's junior season would provide the kind of highlights that would cause the Evansville Sunday Courier and Press to name him to its All-Decade team (1956-1965) before he ever played a game of his senior season. Lightning was provided in the form of QB Mike Walker's strong arm and HB John Rogers' fleet feet.
Bargo's 23 carry 131 yard 2 TD performance in the opener versus Harrison brought a rumble to the crowd. Trailing 24-14, Rogers' 55 yard touchdown reception brought a spark that put the Huskies in position to come back to win. The crowd was in awe when QB Mike Walker hit Dave Cole with a pass that carried to the five yard line with 25 seconds to go. A yellow penalty flag on the play however snuffed out the gain and the Huskies settled for a disappointing narrow loss to the east siders.
The Huskies pounded Vincennes into submission early in the season's second game when Bargo scored 2 touchdowns and Walker hit Bob Carter for another on North's first three possessions. When RB John Rogers took off on a 78 yard scoring run versus Bloomington it gave North a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Huskies couldn't sustain the pace and lost 21-7.
Facing Bosse in week 4, the game was a scoreless tie midway through the fourth quarter when the Bulldogs advanced the ball all the way to the North one yard line. Defensive lineman Mike Stucki then contributed a fumble recovery and the Huskies were hopes were still alive.
QB Walker directed three plays which garnered two first downs and moved the ball to the North 22 yard line. He then put the game squarely on FB Ken Bargo's back. Garnering 80 of the 99 yards in the drive--including a 44 yard run to the Bosse 35--Bargo scored the game's only touchdown on a 1 yard plunge with 3:19 to go.
The defense posted its third shutout in five games when North blanked Mater Dei 20-0. With Bargo running for 138 yards on 29 carries and two scores, the reserves played most of the second half.
North posted its final shutout of the season in a 47-0 crushing of Rex Mundi. The game featured an aerial blitz by QB Mike Walker as he hit 10 of 16 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns. John Rogers added yet another long TD run of 64 yards and caught one of Walker's scoring bombs. Ken Bargo continued his assault on the record books with two more touchdowns in the game.
The Huskies entered the season's final game out of contention for the city or conference titles but enjoyed one of its finest surges in the second quarter against Central. Trailing 12-10 with only 5:25 to play in the first half, QB Walker directed a drive that allowed him to score from the 1 with 2:10 remaining. On the ensuing possession by the Bears, DL Mike Risch recovered a Central fumble, and Walker found WB Bob Carter with an 18 yard scoring pass. The Huskies never looked back and ended the season with a 34-12 win.
