Trailing by 20 points with 6:48 to play in the game, few in the Bosse gymnasium suspected what the Huskies were about to pull off.  Not that the student body wasn't supporting the team even as it struggled.  Hundreds of members of the North student body had staked out a section of the stands to call their own, dressed in bright shades of green, and they had remained vocal throughout the game.  By comparison, the Central student body was as cocky and confident as their players were on the court.

Taunts were being passed both on and off the court and conventional wisdom dictated that the outcome was a foregone conclusion.

But the Husky faithful never lost their faith.

And for their faith they were rewarded with six minutes of play by junior guard Robert West the likes of which have not been seen in some time.  When Central's big forward slid along the baseline for a lay up to make the score 51-31, conventional wisdom dictated that the Bears would "take the air out of the ball" and simply run out the clock.

West changed all that in just three minutes.

Gliding around the perimeter, he took a pass and buried a three and North went into a "press" defense.  West stepped in front of a pass near mid-court and tossed the ball up court.  When Central recovered, the ball ended up back in the junior's hands at the top of the key.  He caught the ball and shot the ball.  Another three points went up on the board.

This time West deflected a Central pass to guard Justice Dixon, raced back down court, and set his feet out near the arc.  Dixon fed him the ball and West drilled his third three in just over a minute of play.  On the in-bounds pass, he leaped and intercepted the ball.  As he fell out of bounds he aimed it at a Central defender and threw.  The ball struck the defender and went out of bounds giving North possession.

On the in bound pass, West took the ball, got open on the baseline, made a shot, and drew a foul.  When he hit "nothing but net" on the free throw, it marked his 12th point in just over two minutes of play, North trailed by just 8 points, and the Central stands had fallen silent. 

North's press continued to erode Central's offense and when they did manage to cross half court, the Bears defied conventional wisdom by continuing to set up quickly and shoot.  When their shots drew iron, they allowed North to quickly transition up court.  Junior center Dillon Mulherrin picked up a pair of critical offensive rebound "put backs" and the gap was down to just four points.  Mulherrin's inspired play in the fourth quarter was critical to the come back.  Central's height advantage had given them domination over the boards while building the lead in the third quarter.  As North's only roster player taller than 6'2", the junior entered the game in the fourth quarter and contested multiple Central big men for every rebound.

With time slipping away, North had to resort to fouls to stop the clock and force Central to the line.  Unbelievably, the senior-dominated lineup of the Bears missed 8 of 9 free throw attempts down the stretch and sophomore C.J. Hedgepeth played much "larger" than his listed 6'1".  Using his great physical gifts to their fullest, he pulled down rebound after rebound as the Bears drew iron from the charity stripe.  He would end the game with his first 10 rebound evening of the season. 

Junior Chase Whitler finally made his presence felt in the game's closing minutes when he sank two free throws to pull North within two points at 51-49.  The crowd was electric and the chants coming from the North student section were at their most frantic.

The Central crowd finally got something to cheer when their big forward broke North's 18 point run with a three pointer from near the five second line.  The clock ticked down under two minutes to play with Central leading by 5.  Justice Dixon then answered destiny's call and single handedly brought the Huskies back within one by first hitting a pair of clutch free throws and then taking a pass from West and driving the lane for two more points to make it 54-53.

Once again, Central appeared to sap the Huskies chances when they tossed in a three pointer to draw ahead by 4 with under 50 seconds to play.  What they weren't aware of was that while Whitler had passed up open opportunities early in the game in search of better ones, with the game-on-the-line he wanted the ball.

He got his wish.

After a Husky missed shot, Mulherrin grabbed a rebound and whipped it out to Whitler.  The diminutive guard didn't hesitate and threw in two points on a quick jump shot to make the score 58-56.  When Central gave up the ball to the Husky press defense there was less than 20 seconds to play and North's four guard offense whipped the ball around the perimeter.  The ball stopped in Whitler's hands.

From deep in the corner he let fly with a high arcing shot that barely rippled the net as it sank through.

North led for the only time in the game at 59-58 and Messrs. West, Dixon, Mulherrin, Hedgepeth, Whitler and Bunnell had pulled off a comeback for the ages.
