WILD FINISH BRINGS HUSKIES 35-34 O.T. VICTORY OVER BULLDOGS
Trailing 28-7 with just under eight minutes to play at Bundrant Stadium Friday night, few observers could have anticipated the wild turn of events that resulted in a North 35-34 overtime victory over the Bosse Bulldogs. Aided by huge penalties, bizarre strategies by the opponent, and extraordinary ‘big play’ awareness by the Husky defense, North generated three scores in less than five minutes to tie the game in regulation. Senior Levi Futtrell’s block of a Bosse extra-point kick in overtime opened the door for the story book finish and Alex Ozette’s perfect kick following a Wayne Crowe touchdown provided the ‘Happily Ever After’ ending.
When junior Dylan McKinney went down with an ankle injury mid-way through the game’s first quarter, it appeared the Huskies would be challenged to put together enough offensive firepower to match the explosive Bulldogs.
SOPHOMORE'S PICK UP THE SLACK
For three and a half quarters, that appeared to be the case, but the Huskies played opportunistic football on defense and got a tremendous amount of mileage out of a trio of sophomore running backs.
Delavion Crenshaw ran hard behind the left side of a resurgent offensive line and gained 32 yards on nine carries in North’s first scoring drive. He finished the game with 52 yards on 19 carries.
Tyler Burnett rushed for 119 yards on just 16 carries and gained 37 of the 65 yards on North’s initial comeback drive in the fourth quarter.
Wayne Crowe not only scored the game tying touchdown in overtime, but he also recovered a blocked punt and returned it 18 yards for a score to tie the game in regulation.
Another sophomore who contributed in the game’s second half was quarterback Robert Pollard. His reads of the option play proved vital as North drove back into the game and he scored North’s first touchdown of the fourth quarter comeback.
He wasn’t the only quarterback to contribute, however, as senior A.J. Wheeler returned to the game with three minutes to play and directed a 50 yard scoring drive. After completing four passes in the drive, Wheeler called his own number and scored the touchdown that cut the deficit to 28-21 with 2:12 to play.
WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?
It was easy to second guess the Bosse coaching staff in the game’s final minutes. After three penalties allowed North to extend its first scoring drive in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs then inexplicably chose to attempt four incomplete passes with a two touchdown lead, the ball at midfield, and less than four minutes on the clock. Conventional wisdom would dictate that a team run the ball and eat up the clock in order to leave their opponent as little time as possible to score multiple touchdowns. As a result of their choice, less than 45 seconds went off the clock.
THE GAME'S BIGGEST PLAY
After Wheeler’s score cut the deficit to just one touchdown, Bosse again attempted to throw the ball without success. Having yet again seen just a few seconds wind off the clock, the Bulldogs chose this time, however, to punt the ball and it resulted in the biggest play of the game.
With a heavy rush up the middle, sophomore Gage Sales broke through and blocked the kick. A scramble for the lose ball resulted with multiple players from both teams possessing the ball for an instant. Crowe emerged from behind the scrum, saw the ball slide free from the pile, scooped it up, and ran 18 yards for the game tying score with 1:43 to play.
DEFENSE COMES UP BIG AGAIN
The game was still in doubt however as Bosse drove the ball into North territory with the clock winding down. North’s fifth personal foul of the game put the Huskies in a tremendous bind by coming on the end of a Bosse 38 yard pass completion. In one play, a certain overtime matchup had become a Bulldog first down at the North 11 yard line with 58 seconds remaining.
The threat ended when senior Trevor Rumsey saw a pass to a Bosse running back had been thrown backwards and was a live ball when the receiver dropped it. Snatching up the loose ball, Rumsey ran 34 yards up field before being caught. North ran out the clock to set up overtime.
FUTTRELL SETS THE STAGE
Bosse had riddled North’s pass defense throughout the game—passing for over 300 yards—and overtime was no exception. It took two plays for the Bulldogs to score, but a false start penalty forced their extra point to be run from the eight yard line.
A high snap stalled the kick attempt just long enough that Levi Futtrell could rush from his position outside the offense’s right side, sweep across in front of the kicker, and block the attempt. If North could score and convert the extra point, the game would belong to the Huskies in the most improbable of comebacks.
UNDERCLASSMEN SHINE ON THE BIG STAGE
In this game, in this final few minutes of play, two sophomores rose to the top of their respective games. While the entire club played up to its best levels of competition (except for the unsportsmanlike conduct fouls), two players in particular made their mark.
Facing second and goal from the eight yard line, Gage Sales fired off the line from his left guard position. Sales is one of the team’s leading defenders with 14 tackles for loss this season and over 40 tackles in total. His ‘bull rush’ of the opponent offensive lineman minutes earlier had allowed him to blast through and block the punt that led to the game tying score. When Sales “fires off the line” it is not just an expression.
The force of his legs, the technique of his blocking style, and the speed to which he can bring his skills to bear combine to make him one of the Huskies most effective offensive linemen. With the game on the line, the adrenaline flowing, and a goal to be achieved, Sales blew away the defender across from him and opened a huge hole.
Junior J.T. Skinner kicked the end out of the way with a ferocious block from his fullback position. Senior Will Moss sealed off the middle linebacker from pursuing the run from the interior and the path was opened for sophomore Wayne Crowe to take the ball and run.
Much like Sales, Crowe has filled a variety of roles for the Huskies this season. He has alternated play at fullback and linebacker. Five minutes of play earlier, he had recovered a fumble at the North 30 to thwart a Bosse scoring opportunity that would have likely sealed the Huskies’ fate had it produced points. Two minutes of play earlier, he had scooped up the blocked punt and tied the game.
In this moment, he had a glimpse of daylight that could yet again provide the Huskies with a chance at victory. Crowe refused to be stopped.
While blocking had allowed him to shoot through the line and into the Bosse secondary, there were plenty of Bulldogs positioned to stop him. In what looked more like a game of bumper pool than football, one defender after another took a shot at Crowe between the three yard line and the end zone.
None were able to deny the sophomore of his second touchdown.
Falling into the end zone with two men on his back, Crowe tied the score at 34. Junior Alex Ozette’s kick split the uprights on the extra point and the North Homecoming crowd stormed the field to celebrate a hugely entertaining, entirely improbable, come-from-behind victory that may have sparked what could be multiple memorable varsity careers for a host of underclassmen.
