WILDCATS RUN OVER HUSKIES 52-7

The North Huskies fell victim to a power running game and an overwhelming defensive line in a 52-7 loss to the Mater Dei Wildcats at Reitz Bowl Friday night.  For the better part of three quarters the game was as lopsided as the score with Mater Dei jetting out to a 45-0 lead before inserting their reserve squad.  Of North's 17 first downs, twelve came after the Wildcats had zoomed out to a 45 point lead.  The victory marked Mater Dei's tenth consecutive victory over the Huskies.

On their first four possessions, Mater Dei (1) returned a punt 43 yards to the North 9, (2) returned a punt 23 yards to the North 23, (3) intercepted a pass and returned it 24 yards to the North 12, and (4) recovered a North fumble at the Husky 33 yard line.  Faced with short fields, the Wildcat offense ran a total of just EIGHT offensive plays to go up 21-0 before the first quarter ended.

The Huskies had no answer.

Even when Mater Dei committed mistakes, North could not capitalize.  Early in the second quarter, freshman Gage Sales recovered a Wildcat fumble at the Mater Dei 40.  Sophomore Dylan McKinney rambled for 13 yards on first down and it appeared as though the Huskies might yet make a game of it.

Mater Dei's All-State defensive end dropped McKinney for no gain on first down.  He then tackled junior Trevor Rumsey for loss on second down.  On third down, the All-State lineman sacked quarterback A.J. Wheeler for a ten yard loss.

North punted the ball away and Mater Dei scored within one minute and ten seconds after taking the ball.

The green and white faithful watched the rest of the game unfold pretty much in a similar fashion.  The Huskies did manage to gain nearly 200 yards of total offense in the second half while playing against the Mater Dei reserved defense.  Rumsey recorded his first touchdown on a nifty six yard cutback run midway thru the fourth quarter to break up Mater Dei's shutout.

North plays Bosse at Enlow Field Friday night.  Featuring an electric quarterback and little else, perhaps the Huskies can contain the Bulldogs' main threat and get back on the winning road.
